Sir Alex Ferguson’s ‘true colours’ on Marcus Rashford say everything about Manchester United’s struggling star
Sir Alex Ferguson’s true stance on Marcus Rashford says everything about Manchester United and England’s struggling star winger.
Marcus Rashford has emerged as Manchester United’s brightest academy graduate of the past decade. Since his debut in February 2016, he has played over 400 games and scored 138 goals, cementing his place in the club’s history.
Despite his undeniable talent, Rashford’s form has been inconsistent throughout his career. When at his peak, few in the league can match his ability, as evidenced by his outstanding 30-goal season under Erik ten Hag in 2022/23.

Last season, however, was a struggle for the winger, with just eight goals in 43 appearances. This season has also been marked by inconsistency, leaving fans and the club hoping for more.
Under new manager Rúben Amorim, Rashford has scored three goals in six matches, but questions persist. Critics argue he is yet to recapture his best form, and reports suggest concerns within the club about whether his lifestyle is affecting his performance on the pitch.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s view on Rashford
When it comes to assessing players, particularly those who have played for Manchester United, many do not look too further than what Sir Alex Ferguson has to say about a star.
The legendary manager managed 1,492 games spanning over 26 years at United, collecting a grand total of 38 trophies, cementing himself as one of the greatest managers ever to live.
The Telegraph reported Sir Alex’s true colours on Rashfording, explaining that the Scotsman had become “convinced” that Marcus Rashford was Manchester United’s standout player following his extraordinary rise to prominence at the club.
The iconic former United boss believed that Rashford’s abilities “needed harnessing” to fully unlock his potential and maximise his impact on the pitch – a challenge that now lies ahead for Amorim should the winger remain at United.
The report also claimed that Ferguson often shared with those close to him that he would have “relished the chance” to manage Rashford during his playing career.
This says everything
Sir Alex’s view on Rashford – that he is a fantastic player who needs proper harnessing in order to thrive, says everything about the 27-year-old winger.
He is the epitome of what it means to be a Manchester United boy – playing for the academy as a kid, supporting the club from day one, then making your debut and scoring over 130 goals – but the dream seems to be dying out.
United have had a turbulent decade since Ferguson left, and multiple managers have failed to get a sustained period of success out of the talented star, just as well as United have failed to secure the best from a whole host of fantastic players who have walked in and out of United’s doors in the last ten years.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s view on Rashford points to a wider systemic issue at the club, that they are consistently underachieving with the talents at their disposal. It is now Amorim’s job to help steer the club in the right direction.
