Sir Alex Ferguson “hugely impressed” with Man Utd star who’s stepped up under Michael Carrick

Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly become a big fan of one of Manchester United’s current stars, who has been getting even better under Michael Carrick.

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United managerial career to date has the club in dreamland.

Wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham have seen United shoot up to fourth in the Premier League table, five points clear above the drop to Europa League spots.

The English boss has also had the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha back to playing their very best football, while the reintegration of Kobbie Mainoo feels like a huge turning point for the club.

While there remain a number of fixtures between now and the end of the season, there is confidence within the club that Carrick can guide the squad back to the Champions League.

Sir Alex impressed with Lammens at United

On deadline day last summer, United announced the signing of 23-year-old goalkeeper Senne Lammens for a fee of around £18 million, and at the beginning of October, he made his debut for United in a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Since then, the Belgian has been described as a ‘steady eddie’ in goal, showing himself to be unfazed by high-pressure moments, confident in his claiming, and proficient at shot-stopping.

According to GiveMeSport, this has caught the eye of legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is said to have been “hugely impressed” with Lammens, noting the goalkeeper’s “calmness, authority and thriving” on the biggest stage.

Ferguson himself often has problems in goal, with it taking him six years to replace Peter Schmeichel with Edwin van der Sar. While no one would expect Lammens to become just as good as these two, early signs show that United have recruited well.

Lammens has quietly been getting better this season

Last season, so much of the talk at United surrounded goalkeeper André Onana and his consistent errors, with the position feeling like it was a suffocating one that would make any goalkeeper choke.

But the lack of talk surrounding what Lammens does on the pitch, beyond good saves, decent passing, and great high-claiming, has shown that all that was needed was a calm and composed head.

There is also an argument that, since Carrick’s arrival at the club, Lammens has become even better. He’s kept two clean sheets in four games – as many as he had under Rúben Amorim, and has made some huge saves to deny two of the best sides in the league in that time.

Lammens has managed to stave off so much of the talk surrounding what Gary Neville called the ‘hardest position in world football’ in reference to being United’s goalkeeper, and Sir Alex’s signature of approval only validates his great form further.
