Senne Lammens’ three possible Manchester United shirt numbers as Altay Bayındır ‘looks for new club’

Senne Lammens has multiple options to pick for his shirt number as he closes in on a move to Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United this summer.

Manchester United are on the verge of signing 23-year-old Senne Lammens as they look to bolster their goalkeeping ranks.

Tom Heaton has extended his stay for another season, while André Onana is expected to remain the club’s No. 1 heading into the new campaign.

The move for Lammens could bring an end to Altay Bayındır’s time at Old Trafford, especially after his error against Arsenal last weekend raised fresh doubts about his future.

According to fresh reports, Bayındır’s representatives have already begun searching for a new club, with Lammens’ arrival likely marking the end of his career at Old Trafford.

Currently with Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League, Lammens is considered one of Europe’s brightest young goalkeepers and is expected to begin as Onana’s backup before challenging for the starting spot.

Below are three shirt numbers Lammens could take during his first campaign at Old Trafford.

#1

Amorim’s first choice, Onana, currently wears the No. 24 shirt at United due to a long-standing affinity for the number, meaning Bayındır has the No. 1 shirt, despite being the second-choice option in the position.

With Lammens set to genuinely compete with Onana for the spot, he could be handed the No. 1 shirt, as there is a genuine chance he can become the club’s long-term first-choice goalkeeper.

However, if Lammens is to arrive before Bayındır leaves, then the Belgian may be barred from wearing the No. 1 jersey, as Premier League rules state that once squad numbers have been submitted for the season, one player can only take another player’s number if they officially leave the club.

A second option Lammens has is to wear the No. 91 kit, which would be the first time in United’s history a senior player has worn that shirt.

Lammens has held the No. 19 kit for his last six seasons across Antwerp’s senior side, junior teams, as well as with Club Brugge KV’s first team and Academy sides, too.

As mentioned above, the No. 91 shirt is free for Lammens to take should he wish to, and it would make him the first-ever United player to wear a kit number in the 90s.

Across his Academy and senior careers so far, Lammens has worn the No. 1, No. 91, and No. 13 jerseys, but the latter is currently occupied by Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu at United, meaning it’s unavailable for him to take.

Instead, to signify his place as United’s initial second-choice goalkeeper, Lammens could choose to select the No. 20 kit – the second-lowest available to him after the No. 14 kit, which is generally reserved for senior players.

The No. 20 shirt was recently freed up after Diogo Dalot wore it for six seasons before moving to the No. 2 shirt following Victor Lindelöf’s departure.

Before Dalot, the No. 20 kit was worn by Sergio Romero, who is widely recognised as one of United’s most reliable second-choice shotstoppers in recent memory, between the 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons, giving Lammens credence to wear the shirt as a competing goalkeeper this coming campaign.
