Senne Lammens reveals one attribute ‘you can’t really teach’ at Manchester United, “trusting yourself…”

Senne Lammens has suggested that you cannot teach one of the attributes he has shown between the sticks at Manchester United.

During the summer transfer window, Manchester United turned their attention to revamping an underperforming attack in an effort to address last season’s struggles in front of goal.

That investment is already paying dividends, with Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško flourishing in recent weeks under the guidance of Michael Carrick.

In addition to committing around £200 million to reshape their frontline, the Reds also strengthened between the posts with the signing of Senne Lammens. The goalkeeper has gone about his work quietly but effectively, bringing much-needed composure and stability to the United defence.

After an outstanding performance in last week’s 1–0 Premier League win over Everton, Lammens has drawn widespread acclaim from former players and supporters alike.

Lammens reveals one attribute ‘you can’t really teach’ at United

The most impressive aspect of Lammens’ performance against Everton was his comfortability in the air when the Toffees were pressuring his goal from corners.

David Moyes’ side had 10 corners and filled the six-yard box but Lammens dealt with every single delivery and even earned praise from the Everton boss after the game.

United fans cheered on Lammens’ debut when he came out and collected crosses into the box and he remains confident in that aspect.

When asked by club media about dealing with those kind of corner tactics, Lammens explained that it isn’t something that you can really teach and instead he focuses on staying calm and trusting himself.

“Yeah, of course we tried to prepare for it and tried to get ourselves ready for it in training but it’s also something you can’t really teach sometimes,” the goalkeeper said.

“It’s [about] staying calm and trusting yourself in those situations. Also learning from experiences this season, there have been more difficult things to learn but I’ve done a good job, I think, and I will keep on adding to it.”

Lammens will react to mistakes

Lammens had his best performance of the season so far last week but he remains a 23-year-old goalkeeper and it’s entirely possible that his next mistake isn’t too far away.

But the thing that has impressed everyone at United is the fact that a mistake will not derail Lammens’ performance levels, and he will move on from those moments quickly.

For example, he almost had a terrible blunder in the opening seconds of that Everton clash when his long-kick hit the opposition player and could have led to an early goal.

He seemed to completely forget about that moment and move on to have one of his best displays for the club.

The young goalkeeper will inevitably make mistakes in the coming months but he does not let them affect his game too much and that is a crucial attribute you need between the sticks at Old Trafford.
