Senne Lammens forces ex-Manchester United star into embarrassing U-turn as ‘brilliant’ point made

Senne Lammens has forced an ex-Manchester United star into making an embarrassing U-turn following his ‘brilliant’ debut on the weekend.

Manchester United concluded their recent run of matches with an impressive 2-0 triumph over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

First-half goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Šeško secured all three points for the Reds on Saturday afternoon, lifting morale across the club to its highest point of the season as the Premier League pauses for the October international break.

A highlight of the afternoon was the long-awaited debut of Senne Lammens. The Belgian goalkeeper, who arrived on transfer deadline day last summer, delivered a calm and confident display; commanding his area, making several solid saves, and earning a clean sheet.

While results under Ruben Amorim have been mixed this season, the victory over Sunderland has helped reignite belief and optimism within the squad as they take a well-earned pause during the two-week international break.

Lammens forces ex-United star into embarrassing U-turn

There seemed to be a lot of criticism thrown towards Lammens before he even stepped foot on a pitch for United simply because people didn’t know much about him.

Paul Scholes essentially suggested that he was not good enough because he only cost around £20 million while former goalkeeper Ben Foster claimed that it was a panic signing and United had not done ‘in-depth analysis’ on Lammens because he was brought in on deadline day.

Foster’s tune has suddenly changed now, with Lammens’ ‘brilliant debut’ for the Reds seeming to push the ex-United shot-stopper into a U-turn on his opinion.

Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Foster said: “It was a brilliant debut. I think the debut is such an important thing for a goalkeeper for that club and he handled it with flying colours. They’ve got to stick with him now.

“If they’re bringing him in now, just before the international break it’s a statement, [saying], ‘You’re our number one goalkeeper now for the rest of the season. Let’s see what you’re made of.'”

Lammens will make mistakes, that is when he will be tested

For supporters, it was frustrating that we had to wait several weeks before seeing Lammens in action and it was also frustrating for pundits as they couldn’t criticise any of his performances.

They instead turned to bizarre ways of analysing the signing of Lammens. Simply waiting to see how he plays and what he is like appears to be a foreign concept nowadays.

Foster’s entire argument about how United ‘panicked’ when signing Lammens was because he was signed late in the window even though it was well-known that United could not do business before sales were made after spending almost £200 million on their frontline earlier in the summer.

Now after one game he is stating that United have ‘got to stick with him’ in goal going forward. It is good to see the 23-year-old already changing people’s opinions but he will eventually make mistakes and receive criticism. That is when we will figure out if he’s ready to be United’s no.1.
