Senne Lammens has made his feelings clear on where he felt Manchester United fell short against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
Manchester United’s poor record at St. James’ Park continued on Monday night as Michael Carrick and his men fell to defeat following a late winner from William Osula.
Jacob Ramsey was giving his marching orders towards the end of the first-half, but Newcastle took the lead shortly after through an Anthony Gordon penalty.
Casemiro levelled the score on the stroke of half-time, with Bruno Fernandes providing an outstanding assist, his 14th of the Premier League season.
United failed to carry that momentum into the second-half despite having a man more, and luck eventually ran out as Osula curled a shot into the bottom corner past Senne Lammens to secure the three points for the Magpies.
Lammens questions United’s mentality
Senne Lammens gave a very post-match interview following United’s defeat on Monday night.
“That is always a bad feeling to lose, just in general today was not our day. It was nowhere near good enough. We scored our goal just before half-time and it was really important to give us a good feeling going into half time,” the Belgian shot-stopper explained.
“When we step out on the pitch for the second half it needs to be better, I think our mentality needs to be better. In every aspect it was not our game today. I’m not sure what we were lacking. Every team has those games, but you can’t put it like that you always have to perform, especially here.
“Heading into half-time we had a pretty good feeling because we scored and playing against 10 men you want to finish it off, we couldn’t get our rhythm going and we need to learn a lot from this.”
This was United’s second loss of the season against 10 men. United lost to Everton 1-0 earlier in the season after Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off after 13 minutes.

United’s luck ran out on Monday night
Michael Carrick has produced some outstanding results during his short reign as United head-coach, but recent performances have left a lot to be desired.
The first vulnerabilities in United’s out-of-possession structure were already visible against Fulham. Marco Silva’s men constantly played through United’s press with ease. A lot of those issues were once again visible against Newcastle on Monday night.

United were also poor against West Ham, struggling to break down the Hammers’ low block. The same goes for the game against Everton, where United struggled to regularly create any big chances.
United’s win against Crystal Palace was also unconvincing, despite having a man more for over half an hour.
Carrick is doing a great job of getting results, but if he is to stay on in a permanent role, there will have to be significant improvements, particularly in United’s high-pressing structure.
