Senne Lammens delivers verdict on controversial Man Utd moment during Newcastle defeat

Senne Lammens has delivered his verdict on the controversial red card during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat against Newcastle.

Manchester United suffered a 2–1 defeat to 10-man Newcastle United in their Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.

United were forced to withstand an energetic start from the hosts but gradually found their rhythm as the first half progressed.

Despite Jacob Ramsey being dismissed after receiving a second yellow card for simulation, Newcastle managed to take the lead from the penalty spot.

The visitors responded just before half-time when Bruno Fernandes delivered a cross for Casemiro, who headed in to add to his tally for the season.

However, rather than building on the equaliser after the break, Michael Carrick’s side turned in a disappointing second-half display and conceded late, slipping to their first defeat under the new manager.

The red card shown to Ramsay in the first-half has split opinion amongst fans, with some believing that the decision was harsh.

Senne Lammens came out but did not feel like he connected with the Newcastle forward, who fell over just afterwards.

“I didn’t feel any contact, I don’t think it was a foul. He was looking for the contact, I was holding myself in and I think the ref made the right decision,” Lammens said after the game.

Even though United had a man advantage, they could not dominate the game and it was not the first time this season. They lost 1-0 against Everton at home despite having an extra player for most of the game.

Playing 10 men isn’t always easy

It is not always simple when a team has a player sent off. Newcastle had the tenacity and fight to make up for it on Wednesday night.

United were simply not good enough. It is their first loss in 2026 but there have been some warning signs in recent weeks.

A win at St James’ Park would have almost solidified a spot in the top five but now the next game against Aston Villa will be very important.

Carrick will know his team need to solve some issues and he will have time on the training pitch to put those adjustments in place.
