Sekou Kone new contract details revealed as Manchester United make smart move
New details about Sekou Kone’s contract at Manchester United have been revealed as the club makes a smart move.
Kone, 18, joined Manchester United on deadline day in a deal reportedly worth £1 million. The club confirmed his signing with a photo alongside technical director Jason Wilcox.
A statement provided more details on his initial role at Old Trafford: “Kone only turned 18 in February and will initially be supported by the Academy to give him time to settle into life in Manchester.”
The Mali youth international made an impression at last year’s U17 World Cup and plays as a defensive midfielder, a position where United have struggled for quality over the past decade. Manuel Ugarte was also brought in as an immediate first-team solution for the same role.
Kone is represented by the player agency Black Skill, who posted their own images on social media after the player’s move to United was confirmed.
One post, which included Kone and his agent at Old Trafford, revealed that the player’s deal at the club will last until 2029.
It would be no surprise if the contract included an option for an additional year, as is usual practice in many of United’s player contracts.
Meanwhile, according to a new report from MailOnline, in the past week, a dinner was arranged with some academy players to help Kone form a friendship group.
It was also explained that it has also been arranged for him to live with house parents to ensure the 18-year-old doesn’t find himself isolated in a new country.
There is a feeling within the club that Kone, who was pursued by a number of teams this summer, will be fast-tracked up the ranks once he is bedded into life in England, but for now, he will bounce between academy sides.
United are taking a smart approach with the young midfielder’s integration and will hope that he can settle into his new life quickly ahead of potential first-team opportunities under Erik ten Hag.
