Scott McTominay reacts to Man Utd fans slamming the club for his £25m Napoli sale
Scott McTominay has reacted to Manchester United fans who slammed the Old Trafford club for his sale to Napoli in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United decided to sell Scott McTominay in the summer in a deal worth around £25 million to Italian side Napoli.
The Scotsman had been raised throughout United’s Academy, making his debut under Jose Mourinho in 2017 and ending his time at the club with 255 appearances.
He had become somewhat of a surprise hero for Erik ten Hag’s side during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 10 goals across the season, which included several match-winning moments.
The Dutch boss, who was sacked in October, said that he did not want the club to sell McTominay but admitted that financial rules made it a beneficial move on the spreadsheets, due to the pure profit received from a homegrown player in a summer where United signed five first-team players for over £200 million.
Since then, United have been struggling and hold hope that new head coach Ruben Amorim can turn things around. Meanwhile, McTominay has had the perfect start to life in Serie A.
Napoli sit top of the Italian table, with the 27-year-old playing a key role so far. Many United fans have a similar opinion to Ten Hag on the sale of McTominay.
In a press conference during the international break, McTominay was asked if it was a compliment to see swarms of fans against his summer sale.
“I don’t read the newspapers or social media,” he replied. “That’s something I stay well away from. There’s no reason for me to pay attention to that. The past is the past.
“I’m enjoying my football and just want to do everything in my powers to push my team higher up the table and do my best for my manager in Italy as well.”
The midfielder is currently focused on the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, with a clash against Croatia coming on Friday evening.
He was further asked about the decision to leave the club he had spent his entire life at for another country and culture.
“Obviously it’s a big decision, there’s no denying that,” the 27-year-old added. “It was a huge decision for me and my family and my friends.
“At times like that in your life you just have to say, ‘Do I want to do it? Absolutely,’ and go for it. There’s no looking back. I’ve never had any regrets in my life or my career and I continue that way to this day.
“I want my career to be successful and I’m going to go out of my way to try and push myself to be the best football player and best person that I can possibly be.”
