“Said it for years…” Three Manchester United icons choose their ideal Ruben Amorim replacements

Three Manchester United legends have given their respective choices for who they would ideally like to replace Ruben Amorim as the coach of the Red Devils.

Given Manchester United’s tough start to the 2025/26 campaign, it is understandable that their manager, Ruben Amorim, has come under fire, with many wanting him to be replaced.

The Reds were in 15th as they headed into match-week seven of the Premier League, although goals from Benjamin Šeško and Mason Mount saw them ease past Sunderland to reach tenth in the table.

There was much optimism surrounding United as they headed into the season, due to their four new signings and their successful pre-season, although this has quickly fizzled out, with Amorim’s stubbornness somewhat at fault.

With the Portuguese tactician not changing his ways, he appears to be on borrowed time at the club. Three United icons have made their chooses clear for a replacement.

United icons pick replacement

During an episode of the Stick to Football podcast, via Manchester Evening News, Roy Keane said: “I’ve said it for years, I’d like Atletico Madrid’s [Diego] Simeone to go in there. I’d like to see him go there.”

“I think he would just create havoc, but good havoc. He’d rock up to that place. No guarantees, but I’d just like to see his personality, his track record.

“People might think styles of football, [but] they scored five against Real Madrid [winning 5-2] last weekend. He doesn’t like his teams giving up too many goals or chances, but they can play a bit and fight.

Despite this, the former United man isn’t an advocate for Amorim’s dismissal, as he stated, “I’d still say give the man a chance, absolutely. Another week!” Gary Neville supported Keane’s view, stating: “I think I’d go with that. I’d go with Simeone.”

Meanwhile, as previously stated by UtdDistrict, Paul Scholes favours the current Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe, for the role, even if he isn’t a fan of his assistant, Jason Tindall.

Is Amorim nearing an exit?

Despite all of these United legends giving their verdicts as to who they would like to replace Amorim as the manager of United, it appears as if the Red Devils coach is still safe in his role.

This is based on the remarks made by Sir Jim Ratcliffe on The Times’ The Business podcast, via Manchester Evening News, where he advocated for Amorim getting more time.

Ratcliffe said, “He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be.

“The press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it’s all going to be roses tomorrow.

“You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.”
