Ruud van Nistelrooy has fired a warning shot at Rúben Amorim that Manchester United fans have reacted to as Leicester City travel to Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

Manchester United return to FA Cup action in the fourth round as they welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford.

The fixture sees the return of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who managed United for four games following Erik ten Hag’s departure before Rúben Amorim took charge. After leaving Old Trafford, the Dutchman was appointed Leicester City’s manager.

United’s last FA Cup outing was a thrilling encounter away to Arsenal. The Reds went ahead through Bruno Fernandes, but Diogo Dalot’s red card gave the hosts a route back into the game, forcing extra time. After 120 minutes of intense football, United held their nerve to win on penalties.

Amorim’s side won five of their seven matches in January but are now aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Leicester clash provides the perfect opportunity to respond.

Van Nistelrooy send warning to Amorim

Speaking on Thursday morning during his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup clash on Friday, Van Nistelrooy sent a warning shot in Amorim’s direction.

The Dutch manager explained that he already has an accute knowledge of the United sqiad following his stint as assistant manager under Erik ten Hag then caretaker role before Amorim arrived at Old Trafford.

“I’m glad I don’t have to analyse the Manchester United squad, I’ll leave that to Rúben,” Van Nistelrooy said. “We have prepared for them and I know the squad inside out.”

Speaking further, the former Old Trafford striker said: “It’s special to go back there. I have history as a player, as an assistant, as a caretaker. My focus is on my players and my team, to get the best out of them and to show what we’re about, in the fight and in the spirit.”

United fans react to Van Nistelrooy’s warning

As always, United fans have taken to social media to react to Van Nistelrooy’s warning, and considering that United have lost five of their last seven home fixtures, they have a right to be worried.

“Amorim I dare you,” one said in defiance in reference to the possibility of United’s head coach falling to a defeat after choosing not to keep Van Nistelrooy at the club in November.

“If that Leicester Team beat us then Amorim should be sacked immediately after full time,” another claimed, although it’s hard to feel that this wasn’t stated as hyperbole.

Another took a different approach, saying: “He hasn’t won five games for Leicester City but he’s confident to eliminate Manchester United in FA [Cup].”

When asked about United’s recent home form, Van Nistelrooy dismissed it, explaining that Leicester have their problems too and that just because a side has lost recently does not mean they will lose again later on.

“We have our own issues,” he said. “We have to look at us. I don’t believe in sequences. You can always win a game after you’ve lost a couple. We want to represent ourselves in the best way possible.”
