Ruud van Nistelrooy reveals key Premier League figure who convinced him about Leicester City job
Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed the key figure within the Premier League that he spoke to before accepting the Leicester City job.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over as Leicester City manager this week following the club’s decision to part ways with Steve Cooper.
Leicester, currently 16th in the Premier League, will rely on Van Nistelrooy to guide them away from the relegation zone.
After a year managing PSV Eindhoven’s first team, Van Nistelrooy joined Manchester United as Erik ten Hag’s assistant earlier this season.
He then stepped in as interim manager after Ten Hag’s departure, overseeing a successful spell with three wins and a draw in four games, including two victories over Leicester City.
Although Van Nistelrooy expressed interest in remaining at United under Ruben Amorim, the new head coach brought in his own staff, leading to Van Nistelrooy’s departure.
In the following weeks, several clubs have been linked with securing the services of the Dutchman, with The Foxes eventually winning the race.
The United legend has explained that he spoke with former Leicester and current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca about the midlands club and his experience during his time there, which helped sway his decision.
“I have to say, when the interest came, the first one I called was Enzo [Maresca],” Van Nistelrooy told Leicester City’s club media.
“He was so positive about it. He absolutely loved his time. When you hear these things, it’s a club you want to be a part of.
“Obviously, with the interest coming, I phoned him and I asked him more detailed questions about the Club, the structures, the people that work there, the squad, the stadium, the fans, the town, the surroundings… it was a fantastic conversation. It’s always a pleasure to talk to him.”
Van Nistelrooy’s first game comes on Tuesday evening against West Ham in the Premier League.
