Ruben Amorim’s 14-word transfer message to Man Utd chiefs couldn’t be clearer, he wants one signing
Ruben Amorim made his thoughts on one priority position at Manchester United extremely clear ahead of the January transfer market.
Manchester United fell to yet another defeat on Monday evening as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle United in an embarrassing display at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim has admitted that the job is more difficult than he initially anticipated and he’s only had four full training sessions so far to try and implement his system.
It already appears clear that the Reds need signings to help the new head coach but funds are extremely limited and players will need to be sold in order to buy in January.
Amorim’s Zirkzee experiment failed
The United boss decided to start Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund in the same team for the first time against The Magpies and it did not work at all.
Speaking ahead of the game, Amorim was asked about the reasoning for this decision and admitted that Zirkzee is ‘not a number nine’, so was trying him in the deeper position.
“Yeah, because I think he is not a number nine… a clear number nine,” he responded.
“I think Zirkzee plays really well between the lines, so we try it today.”
And it didn’t really work in the no.10 position either, although the Dutchman was unfortunate to be substituted out early as many players were also poor.
Amorim’s feelings on Zirkzee are clear
Yet, it seemed clear beforehand, and even more obvious after Amorim’s comments, that Zirkzee does not really fit his plans.
The manager is essentially admitting that he only has one real striker in his squad, something that must be a wake-up call for United chiefs.

Buying another striker in the summer was critical for any manager but Zirkzee’s suitability was questionable under Erik ten Hag and even more-so with Amorim at the helm. They are back at square one in that regard.
Whether or not a January sale could be possible is unknown. Juventus are reportedly monitoring his situation and it may be the right decision to for United to part ways with the 23-year-old simply because they can not afford to buy players without sales.
Asked about signing players in the mid-season window, Amorim said: “We don’t have that possibility if we don’t take [sell] some players.”
