Ruben Amorim and the Manchester United board have to make some strong decisions otherwise failure will continue to happen at Old Trafford.
Manchester United delivered a dismal performance in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, capping off their season in the worst possible fashion.
Conceding in the first half due to sloppy defending was hardly surprising—it’s been a recurring theme throughout their campaign.
What was more concerning, however, was United’s complete lack of attacking threat. Amad showed some promise early on, but faded significantly after the break.
Bruno Fernandes had a dreadful game, and with the captain out of sorts, no one else stepped up to provide creativity in midfield.
Failing to score in 90 minutes against the only Premier League side that can match them for defensive lapses is nothing short of astonishing.
Europa League final shows Onana must be sold
In the first half, United actually looked pretty comfortable in their play until the ball made its way towards their box. Once it was there, they all looked like a bag of nerves.
That has become a trend this season, with players struggling inside their own penalty area, and it all starts from one man.
André Onana was nervy from the very first moment in Bilbao. So many defenders say that they gain confidence from their goalkeeper and that is impossible with United’s current shotstopper.
Huge question marks are on him for the goal and he refused to help his teammates on so many occasions. Leny Yoro was ushering the ball back to him in one instance so he could pick up the ball – Onana was stood on his goal-line.
There are so many offensive questions and that is unsurprising considering the lack of quality up there, but United play with three centre-backs yet still look pathetic defensively.
Amorim cannot keep Onana at United
Various reports have said that Amorim is happy to have Onana for another season but that could be catastrophic for him. The goalkeeper is simply not good enough.
Amorim knows that he needs big changes and an immediate turnaround. In order to do that, you need important changes in important positions.
Striker is one of those, the heart of midfield is another and goalkeeper is the third. You can look at many other teams and see how much they improve after bringing in a top class goalkeeper.
They bring confidence to the rest of the team, and that is a change that has to happen at Old Trafford. You cannot excuse these sort of performances.
