Ruben Amorim was furious after one shocking moment during Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.

Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League clash in North London on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams have struggled this season, but Spurs capitalised on United’s defensive frailties to break the deadlock through James Maddison.

He was the only player reacting when André Onana weakly parried a shot from Lucas Bergvall into a dangerous area, leaving Maddison with a simple finish.

Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s side was wasteful in attack, failing to score against a Spurs defense that has been vulnerable all season.

Amorim’s cautious approach was evident as he made just one substitution, introducing Chido Obi in the 90th minute—far too late for him to make an impact on his debut.

Amorim’s anger on show during United vs Spurs

United have been very poor this season but one of their biggest problems has been missing chances in crucial moments. It was also an issue last term.

That was no different against Spurs, who scored their third shot of the game to open the scoring.

Amorim’s side had the best chance to level the scoring before half-time when Bruno Fernandes smartly slid Alejandro Garnacho into the box.

The Argentine had buckets of space to pick his spot but somehow lifted the ball into the crowd above the goalposts, and the chance to equalise was gone.

When you are playing poorly as a team, you need players to be able to deliver when you conjure up moments and the winger has failed at that in recent months and Amorim made his feelings clear on the touchline.

As Laurie Whitwell noted, Amorim “wheeled away in anger when Garnacho skied that shot”, with the journalist describing it as a “glorious chance” for the 20-year-old.

United need Garnacho to step up

Garnacho’s season has been strange. The Argentine has 14 direct goal contributions but just four of those have come in the Premier League.

He has shown promise and continues to do so, but the problems are the same as last season – consistency in front of goal and in his final action.

If the 20-year-old had even 10 per cent more composure in the final third he could be heading towards a stunning goal tally this term but instead he continues to miss chances.

Ideally, he would be getting the chance to come in and out of the team without the burden of being one of the few threats in the final third. But things at Old Trafford are far from ideal.

United and Amorim need Garnacho to kick into gear in terms of goalscoring, because he is one of the only options who looks like they can provide that spark.
