Ruben Amorim has been told that it would be a ‘risk’ to start one Manchester United player against Chelsea on the weekend.
Manchester United entered the summer market in search of a new goalkeeper and ultimately secured the signing of highly rated prospect Senne Lammens.
The 23-year-old has caught the eye with his performances for Royal Antwerp over the past year, and United’s scouts have been monitoring him for some time. Still, making the leap to Premier League level represents a significant challenge.
With André Onana sent out on loan, Altay Bayındır has remained in contention. The Turkish international started once again against Manchester City but looked unsettled and error-prone.
Lammens, meanwhile, was named on the bench. He will be eager to seize his chance soon, particularly with Ruben Amorim in urgent need of stability and assurance in goal.
Amorim told one United star isn’t “good enough”
Despite the difficulties in between the sticks at Old Trafford, ex-United winger Lee Sharpe is unsure whether Lammens is good enough to start for Amorim’s side.
Sharpe has suggested that Emi Martínez would have been a better signing and how starting Lammens in the next game against Chelsea would be a ‘risk’.
“I don’t know if Lammens will be good enough to play first team straightaway,” said Sharpe while speaking to AceOdds.com.
“I was a bit disappointed they didn’t get Martinez from Villa as I think he would have been able to cope with the pressure and help the backline and bring something of a big personality and a big winner to the dressing room.
“The new goalkeeper is a young lad. It’s a big weight on your shoulders to come in and be the No. 1 goalkeeper at Man Utd. We don’t know until he’s put in. Will they put him in against Chelsea and risk him?”
Lammens risk is worth taking
It is obviously a risk to bring Lammens into the side as no one really knows how he will adapt his game in the Premier League.
But United do not necessarily need him to perform excellently. At the moment, whoever is playing in goal at Old Trafford is creative a nervous energy. That is something that Amorim needs to get rid of.

Lammens doesn’t need to make world-class saves when he comes into the team. He will simply be tasked with doing the basics right and filling the defence with more confidence.
Of course, it is easier said than done to do that, but the risk is worth taking when the alternative has already proven to not be good enough.
