Ruben Amorim has been told that an academy star at Manchester United is already better than two big-money players in the first-team.
Manchester United have many exciting players developing in the academy at the moment, and Ruben Amorim should be looking to bring some into the first-team picture soon.
Many young players have been sent on loan for the upcoming season to get consistent game-time in a professional team.
Toby Collyer has joined West Brom in the Championship on a season-long loan after initially breaking into the first-team squad at Old Trafford last year.
The 21-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Reds and Amorim has been told that the youngster is better than other options in the midfield.
Amorim told United academy star “is better” than £110m duo
Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are the current options in the deeper role in Amorim’s squad, but former Arsenal midfielder Adrian Clarke has claimed that Collyer is better than those two even though United spent around £110 million on them.
“Toby Collyer got quite a lot of game time for Manchester United last season, albeit Manchester United’s midfield is pretty disastrous, but he is still better than the likes of Casemiro and Ugarte,” he said on the What the EFL podcast.
“[He was better] at times last season and now he is there [West Brom] on loan.”
Collyer explained in the summer how he wanted to stay at Old Trafford but also said how he will speak to United chiefs to discuss what the best move is.
“My feeling at this moment is I want to stay. First and foremost, I want to be here and play as many games for Man United as possible,” he said.
“I’ll sit down with the manager and higher-ups and see what’s the best solution; the best way for me to develop, whether it’s stay here or go on loan.
“The end goal for me is to play as many minutes as possible here, hopefully starting every week.”
Collyer could get chance next season
Collyer is the kind of midfielder that can become a very useful squad player. A midfielder who will work tirelessly and do the dirty work when needed.
He will probably never be a consistent starter at Old Trafford but it would be smarter to bring him through rather than signing a backup midfielder for £40 million.
He is not better than Casemiro at this moment in time, however, but some arguments could be made that he can do the ‘destroyer’ role like Ugarte does.
Collyer will be hoping for plenty of game-time at West Brom this season. Casemiro’s contract expires next summer and Ugarte could be sold if his form does not improve, and that could mean that opportunities come in the midfield.
