Ruben Amorim has been told that one of his Manchester United stars could become ‘dangerous’ in a new position next season.
There were not many positives to come from Manchester United’s campaign last term, as they sunk to a miserable 15th-place finish in the Premier League.
Ruben Amorim was brought in mid-way through the season and many players struggled to perform in his new 3-4-3 system.
It was quickly obvious that some didn’t suit the way of play Amorim wanted. Joshua Zirkzee struggled initially and was booed when he came off early against Newcastle in December.
But the striker recovered from that setback and proved to be one of the small positives to come from that season and he will be looking to improve more going forward.
Amorim told that United star can be ‘dangerous’ in new position
It quickly became obvious that Amorim preferred Rasmus Højlund to Zirkzee upfront and a lot of the latter’s football came in the no.10 roles.
But ex-Red Giuseppe Rossi believes that Zirkzee can become ‘dangerous’ next term if he returns to the no.9 role, with the likes of Matheus Cunha and (potentially) Bryan Mbeumo surrounding him.
“At a striker level, I always root for Zirkzee, a player capable of playing on his own, but also capable of playing for the team,” Rossi told Flashscore.
“He is a nine and that’s why I would like to see him a bit closer to the goal, where he can be in dangerous situations more often, I think that’s the most important thing.
“I hope the fans will be patient with Zirkzee. He is someone who can really make a difference. Højlund is young, good, but I don’t see him at the potential that Zirkzee can reach.”
Zirkzee enjoying pre-season start
Zirkzee was among those to report for training at the beginning of this week, while Højlund was granted extra time off after representing Denmark last month.
The Dutchman appeared to get off to a good start at Carrington, linking up with new signing Cunha and providing some classy finishes in the session.
For Zirkzee, missing out on pre-season last term was impactful for him and it took a while until he got going for the team. A full summer of preparation is exactly what he needs in order to hit the ground running.
Rossi is not the only one predicting a good future for the striker, with Bruno Fernandes sending him a supportive message on Instagram this week. “My man they ain’t ready for you,” the club captain wrote.
The ex-Bologna star will be hoping to prove them right in the coming months.
