Rúben Amorim told he may now be SACKED from Manchester United after making a “complete mess” and Europa League loss

Rúben Amorim has been told he may be sacked this summer after Manchester United’s loss against Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, capping off a frustrating campaign with a lifeless performance.

Spurs started brightly and took the lead just before half-time, when Brennan Johnson bundled the ball in following a deflection off Luke Shaw.

United struggled to find any rhythm, and despite late changes from Rúben Amorim—bringing on Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee—the team failed to muster a meaningful response.

Tottenham controlled the closing stages with ease, and United, lacking urgency and cohesion, never looked like equalising. The result means they will miss out on Champions League football for another year.

Shearer wouldn’t be surprised if Amorim is sacked

Speaking in reaction to the Europa League loss, former Premier League striker and regular pundit Alan Shearer has stated he would not be surprised to see Amorim sacked this summer.

“There will be a lot of questions around Ruben Amorim’s future now and very much like the Spurs situation, it wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t the manager at the beginning of the season,” Shearer said. “Whether that’s his choice or not, I guess.

“I’ve said it so many times, there’s no way he’s gone into that football club and expected what he found. There’s no way he thought it was that bad. He couldn’t have, because I’m not sure you’d go.

“He hasn’t helped the situation. They’ve actually got so much worse under him. It might have been papering over the cracks if they had won the Europa League, but their problems were summed up in that 97 minutes: no creativity, no legs, no energy, no goals, and a complete mess.”

Amorim is adamant that he will not quit this summer

When United pulled Amorim from Sporting CP to Old Trafford in November, he initially requested that he join in the summer, but the club told him that if he didn’t join there and then, they would give the job to someone else.

However, in the wake of the Europa League final defeat, there have been questions surrounding whether he is the right man for the job at the club, and he was asked as such in his post-match press conference.

“In this moment, I’m not going to be here defending myself,” Amorim told the press. “It’s not my style, I cannot do it. It’s really hard for me. I have nothing to show to the fans and say.

“[I can’t say] ‘I’m going to improve because of this, I have these problems’. I will not do nothing, so in this moment it’s a little bit of faith, so let’s see. Like I said before coming here, in the flash [interview positions], I’m always open.

“If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quite. Again, I’m really confident about my job and, as you can see, I will not change nothing in the way I do things.”

Shearer was speaking to BetFair.
