Ruben Amorim has been tipped to avoid a ‘strange’ selection decision for Manchester United’s upcoming clash with rivals Manchester City.
Ruben Amorim’s start to life at Manchester United has been far from convincing, with his side collecting just one win, one draw, and two defeats from their opening fixtures of the 2025/26 season.
The campaign began with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, a performance that offered glimpses of potential despite the result. A 1-1 draw away at Fulham followed, though it did little to lift the mood.
United’s struggles deepened in the Carabao Cup, where they were embarrassingly knocked out by League Two outfit Grimsby Town on penalties after a 2-2 stalemate. Their first victory finally came against Burnley, secured in dramatic fashion by a stoppage-time penalty from Bruno Fernandes in a 3-2 win.
Next up is the Manchester derby at the Etihad after the international break, a daunting test in which Amorim will be desperate for his team to step up.
Amorim tipped to avoid “strange” United selection call vs City
There are some interesting selection calls for Amorim to make for this game, with many fans wondering whether Benjamin Šeško will finally start in the Premier League.
The summer signing has been introduced as a substitute in all three games after missing most of pre-season, but he seems ready to now play, especially with Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha’s fitness in the balance.
The Athletic reporter Laurie Whitwell has tipped Amorim to start Šeško in this game, and claimed that it would be ‘strange’ if the ex-RB Leipzig forward is not in the lineup.
“Is that Amorim wanting to wait for him to adjust to English football and the connections he needs with his teammates in the attack?” questioned Whitwell on the Talk of the Devils podcast.
“Is it loyalty and fidelity to Mason Mount who has started the season really well?
“But the injury to Mount now and the injury to Matheus Cunha does really raise the prospects of Sesko starting this game. It would be strange if he didn’t start now.”
When quizzed on if he really believes Sesko will start, Whitwell added: “I think so, particularly if Cunha and Mount are injured I just don’t see how he doesn’t.”
United must revert after pre-season change
It is understandable that Amorim has wanted to slowly introduce Šeško after his interrupted pre-season, but he has now completed three full games in a couple of weeks.
Also, while Cunha and Mount have done well when playing centrally, it is clear that United would benefit with a proper striker through the middle.

In the earlier pre-season games, especially against Bournemouth, the Reds looked excellent in attacking moments while they were playing with a striker.
Once the United boss attempted to use a false-nine, it just hasn’t been the same and Šeško is now ready for that to change back.
