Rúben Amorim has to thank Thomas Tuchel for a dynamite tactical option that he believes is “perfect” for Manchester United.

Rúben Amorim has officially begun his duties as Manchester United’s head coach, arriving at Carrington on Monday morning to take charge following Erik ten Hag’s departure last month.

The 39-year-old hit the ground running, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and three other members of the coaching staff relieved of their duties soon after his arrival in Manchester.

Over the next two weeks, Amorim will focus on evaluating his squad before deciding on his first starting XI. His debut match as manager will be a Premier League fixture away to Ipswich Town.

Amorim has already confirmed plans to implement his signature 3-4-2-1 formation from the start, raising questions about how the players will adapt to his system.

Mount is “perfect”

One player Amorim has already highlighted as “perfect” for his system is Mason Mount. Mount has only made 26 appearances since he signed for United in 2023, having had multiple injury issues over the last 18 months.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” gushed Amorim in conversation with club media on Friday afternoon.

“You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.

“He played in this system [before], so it’s perfect for him,” Ruben said. “I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

Tuchel to thank

Amorim’s line to Mount’s abilities in the position is a reference to the 25-year-old’s stint under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, where the pair won the Champions League.

Mount established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous players during that period, and it was his form under Tuchel that led United to signing the player from the London club once it became clear he would not sign a new contract at Chelsea.

Tuchel’s three-at-the-back system helped Mount flourish. The midfielder is known for his energy and intelligence across the front line, which are traits Amorim will no doubt appreciate in the coming months.

If he can stay fit, he could become one of Amorim’s most integral players.
