Ruben Amorim inserted a special “Manchester United clause” in his contract that saves INEOS £8.3 million
Ruben Amorim inserted a special Manchester United clause into his contract that will help INEOS save £8.3 million should he join Old Trafford.
Multiple reports have confirmed that, following Erik ten Hag’s sacking, Ruben Amorim is the leading candidate to succeed as head coach of Manchester United.
It has been claimed that talks between the Portuguese boss and United have been going on for as many weeks and that he has verbally agreed to join the club.
Amorim, who has managed Sporting for four and a half years, has been making waves across European football and was considered by Liverpool as a potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp.
Beyond this, he also had an interview for the West Ham job in the summer, although he later pulled out of talks and labelled them a “mistake.”
Now, with Ten Hag having left the position, United is weighing up whether or not to pay the release clause in Amorim’s contract.
Amorim’s release clause
Reports from Portugal have claimed that the 39-year-old’s current deal contains a release clause of £16.6 million for clubs outside Portugal and £25 million for clubs in the country.
This contradicts reports in England, where it is claimed that Amorim’s contract has a release clause of £8.3 million.
However, as per Sport Witness, Portuguese outlet A Bola has now clarified the situation—United have a special, discounted price.
According to the report, United are one of seven clubs who only need to pay £8.3 million to release Amorim for his current deal. The other clubs are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Man City, and Juventus.
This will save United £8.3 million, as they do not have to stoop to Sporting’s £16.6 million demands for Amorim if they were not considered one of these clubs.
