Ruben Amorim sets new challenge for Harry Maguire after Man Utd heroics, “he needs to show that…”

Ruben Amorim has set a new challenge for Harry Maguire following on from his Manchester United heroics against Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United secured an incredible victory against Liverpool at Anfield on the weekend and they are now looking ahead to a home clash with Brighton.

Harry Maguire was the match-winner in Merseyside and the defender has been receiving plenty of praise since his header found the back of the net on Sunday afternoon.

But with that game now behind us, Ruben Amorim is hoping to see further improvement from the experienced central defender for the rest of the campaign.

Maguire might not feature against the Seagulls after picking up a knock in training during the week.

Amorim sets new challenge for Maguire

Speaking ahead of the Brighton clash, Amorim was asked about Maguire and his feelings on the defender’s turnaround at Old Trafford.

While Amorim is pleased for Maguire, he also believes that the Englishman can offer more in terms of his ball-playing ability.

“It is good for him to play with three centre backs so sometimes you help players with the way you play,” Amorim said of Maguire during his pre-match press conference.

“I am really pleased. He is not young but he can learn a lot.

“He can be so much better with the ball, he has that quality and he needs to show that.”

Maguire contract talk too early

Maguire was a great ball-playing defender in his earlier years at United and still shows his passing range on occasion nowadays.

But it is true that he doesn’t look to play through the lines as much anymore, although some may argue that is partly due to the tactical setup under Amorim.

Nevertheless, it is clear that the United boss does not want to see any complacency creep into Maguire’s – or any United players’ – game after some good performances.

Maguire’s contract with the club expires at the end of the season although Amorim has suggested now is not the time to focus on a renewal for the player.
