Ruben Amorim could be set to make three permanent position changes at Manchester United next season after several signings in the summer transfer window.
Following a disappointing season, Manchester United are moving swiftly in the transfer market as they look to rebuild ahead of the new campaign.
Ruben Amorim has already made his first addition with the signing of Matheus Cunha, and attention has now turned to Bryan Mbeumo, who is open to joining Old Trafford.
United are also actively pursuing a new striker, with several candidates on their radar. Securing three attacking targets would provide a significant boost to a forward line that struggled for consistency last season.
Liam Delap was initially the preferred option up front, but he has since chosen to join Chelsea. However, there is growing optimism at United that a deal for Viktor Gyökeres could still be reached after it was revealed he is still keen on a move.
Should the Reds complete all three of those deals, it would likely be an outlay of around £182.5 million, with Mbeumo and Gyökeres both valued at around £60 million each.
Amorim set to make three United position changes
After strengthening the forward line at Old Trafford, there are likely going to be some changes within the squad and Amorim could make three permanent position changes.
With both Cunha and Mbeumo set to take the two no.10 positions in the team, it is expected that Bruno Fernandes is permanently placed in the midfield pivot in Amorim’s system after excelling there in periods of last season.
During the 2024/25 campaign, Fernandes started deeper 20 times, while he played in the advanced midfield position 32 times. It is more likely that he’s further back more often with a bolstered attack next term – which also means that United need to find the perfect midfield partner for him.
Meanwhile, Amad is also someone who would regularly play in the frontline while also playing some good football as the right wingback. Amorim clearly wants at least one of those players on the flanks to be a naturally attacking star.
With Mbeumo coming in ahead of him, Amad is likely to be used way more as a wingback – but ideally the system and personnel improve in a way that he’s still proving a lot of danger going forward. It has also been noted that Mbeumo is a workhorse and could potentially rotate positions with the Ivorian.
Finally, with Amad and Diogo Dalot the options at right wingback, as well as a potential new signing, it feels like Noussair Mazraoui will be making the permanent switch to play as a right centre-back. He even admitted that he prefers playing in that position.
Mazraoui hardly shined when he was operating as a wingback but is very useful in that back three and will be pushing to start in that role next season.
Fernandes needs top midfield partner
The change in roles for Mazraoui and Amad feel like they will be seamless, with the new positions probably being their best in an Amorim system.
However, while Fernandes has also played his best football over the last year in that deeper role, it feels like he does need a better partner to make it work properly.

Casemiro is a better option than Manuel Ugarte at this point in time but there are still question marks over the Brazilian in the Premier League. He excelled in Europe last term.
Having a player who can cover ground out of possession while also being comfortable progressing the ball from deep feels like an essential signing this summer but it will likely have to wait until several sales are made.
