Rúben Amorim looks set to include at least seven Manchester United Academy stars as they prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Manchester United are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon, hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
Rúben Amorim’s side comes off a remarkable comeback against Olympique Lyonnais, securing a 7-6 aggregate victory that sealed their spot in the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao.
Amorim will also be seeking revenge against Vitor Pereira’s Wolves, who stunned United with a 2-0 victory back in December, courtesy of goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan.
The 40-year-old manager will undoubtedly be eager to channel the momentum from their thrilling win over Lyon as they return to domestic competition.
Amorim to go strong with Academy players
Amorim is expected to lean heavily on the Academy for the upcoming trip after he admitted that many of his current first-team squad are suffering from fatigue following the 120 minutes against Lyon.
“I have to see it, players like Dalot, they are always ready, but today he was really tired,” Amorim said. “The guys that are at risk to have an injury, we will try to save them so we will see tomorrow [Friday].”
Although Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelöf had to depart Old Trafford at half time of the game due to personal problems, both are available. However, Lindelöf may drop out of the squad in order to accommodate the return of Chido Obi.
As for the other Academy players who may be handed starts against Wolves, one such is Jaydan Kamason, who has been touted as a possible wing-back for Amorim on the right flank as an understudy to Dalot.
It’s expected that Harry Amass may be handed another start on the left-hand side, while Kobbie Mainoo may also make his first start in over two months after his goal against Lyon.
As mentioned above, 17-year-old striker Obi is expected to return to the squad and could make his first start for the club.
Others, such as Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Christian Eriksen, could all be reinstated into the team as part of a mass rotation, while there is hope that young players Gokwill Kukonki and Jack Moorhouse may be handed debuts.
