Ruben Amorim sends ruthless message Man Utd star after Bodo/Glimt win – he must improve one area
Ruben Amorim has sent a ruthless message to one Manchester United star after the victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
Ruben Amorim earned his first victory as Manchester United head coach with a dramatic win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday night.
In his Old Trafford debut, Amorim witnessed a dream start as Alejandro Garnacho scored within the opening minute, capitalising on Rasmus Højlund’s relentless pressing.
Bodo/Glimt quickly turned the game around with two goals by the 25th minute, but Højlund brought United level just before halftime with a brilliant display of skill and composure.
The second half saw Højlund strike again, securing the lead after a superb link-up between Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte, whose precise assist set up the decisive goal.
Despite relentless pressure from the visitors in the closing stages, André Onana’s stunning saves ensured United held on to claim their second Europa League win of the season.
Amorim tells Højlund what he needs to improve
Højlund had his best performance of the season, being involved in all three goals and offering solid hold-up play throughout the game.
After full-time, Amorim was sure to praise his no.9, who is almost certain to start on the weekend against Everton.
But the 39-year-old also made sure to make the striker know where he still needs to improve, commenting on him having too many touches when he tries to hold up the ball.
“I think he improved the connection,” Amorim told reporters. “[But] I think he has to improve more because sometimes he gives too many touches when he holds the ball.
“But he’s really important for us because when we are in the low block he is the guy to hold the ball, to connect for transitions, he did that very well, he has that characteristic, he was aggressive in the goals, he was aggressive in the box and he is a quality player.
“I think he scores the most difficult goals so he has a lot to improve. Is the same for every player but he did a great job today.”
Højlund thinks Amorim’s system is perfect for them
It was a brilliant first start under Amorim for Højlund and he believes that the new system will suit him like a glove.
“You can already see now the patterns and it’s getting better, but it needs time to get into the season after a difficult start,” the striker told TNT Sports.
“We just need to build on it and for me, it reminds me of playing with Atalanta where we played 3-4-3 and it suits me very well.”
While there are definitely improvements needed in his game, it seems that Højlund will suit this new style much more than he did under the previous management.
