Ruben Amorim has revealed the secret improvements he has seen from four Manchester United stars in his system.

Manchester United are enduring a tough season, and Ruben Amorim’s mid-season appointment has brought little improvement.

Currently 15th in the Premier League, the team has struggled to adapt to Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system, which brought him success at Sporting.

Since taking charge in November, the Portuguese coach has faced significant challenges on and off the pitch.

When playing in a back three, the centre-backs have a major role in how the team plays. Too often United’s defence has been a flat back five and that has simply invited pressure and limited options on the ball.

However, when there is more aggression, with those defenders stepping up in and out of possession, improvements can be seen.

Amorim reveals secret improvement from back three

Amorim has explained that he has been seeing improvements with the three centre-backs in his system in recent weeks even if it hasn’t been obvious to those watching.

The backline in recent weeks has often consisted of Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro – with Noussair Mazraoui also playing there on occasion.

“In terms of the results, it’s bad,” Amorim told club media. “Also the performances are not improving a lot, to be honest.

“But the good thing is that we are learning a lot. We are changing a lot of things but you cannot see it. Here in Carrington, the way we want to do things. I’m understanding the players and doing, in my head, what is the future of the squad.

“And that can be really important next year, but there is also a risk, when you are planning and doing and thinking to the future, you have to pay attention to the present. And the present is really hard in the moment because the results and the performances are not there.

“In the small things in our game, I see improvement. It’s hard to see but I see it.

“I think we are improving in the last two games [before Real Sociedad], for example, the way we have possession. Our central defenders are playing in a different way, more confident.”

Yoro important to Amorim style

With the way which Amorim wants his defenders to play, it feels like Yoro will become very important to the team going forward.

The young Frenchman has been impressing in recent weeks but has come off early in some games. His confidence when stepping out of the backline is better than any other current option.

Yoro also has the ability to recover well after stepping up, something other defenders at Old Trafford do not have the capabilities to do.

It still feels like Amorim is easing Yoro into consistent action, but it would be no surprise if he quickly becomes a key player for his system.
