With Manchester United’s pre-season coming to a close with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, Ruben Amorim has revealed what new signing Benjamin Šeško must do as he turns his attention to his side’s season opener against Arsenal
Manchester United wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina, eventually securing victory on penalties to lift the Snapdragon Cup.
Ruben Amorim’s side made a sluggish start, falling behind in the 8th minute when Simon Sohm was left unmarked at a corner and slotted home to give the Italians the early advantage.
The setback sparked United into life. Their attacking play grew sharper, and on 25 minutes, a pinpoint corner from Bruno Fernandes forced Robin Gosens into turning the ball into his own net.
United dominated much of the second half, with Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha, and Amad all spurning good opportunities to find a winner. In the end, neither side could break the deadlock, sending the match to penalties, where United came out on top.
Amorim’s plan for Šeško ahead of league opener
Benjamin Šeško took to the Old Trafford pitch for his official unveiling, joined by fellow arrivals Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego León, earning thunderous applause as Amorim’s rebuild of the squad continues.
While understandably not playing any minutes on the day, Amorim spoke after the game on what the plan is ahead of his side’s opening Premier League fixture next Sunday when they host Arsenal.
He said: “It’s going to be tough because we tried to arrange a full week of training. We are going to have two really strong sessions with time to work and then we are going to break for a little bit and then two days to really think about the strategy for the game and we will be ready.”
With Rasmus Højlund’s future at the club looking uncertain, there is a possibility that the Slovenian forward will start from the beginning of the game, but considering the fact he will only have been at the club for a week by the time the fixture comes around, he will most likely start from the bench.
Fiorentina draw showed promising signs for Šeško
Šeško joins Manchester United with a great reputation, with the Slovenian being the current top goalscorer of all under 23s in Europe’s top five leagues. Despite standing tall at 6ft 5in, Šeško was one of the fastest strikers in the Bundesliga last season.
In United’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina, Mbeumo, who was primarily signed for his prolific nature in front of goal, displayed a different quality that could work very well with United’s latest signing.

The Cameroonian winger played in a number of fantastic crosses from corner situations that could go hand-in-hand with Šeško’s great aerial ability, with the Slovenian having the highest aerial success rate among Bundesliga strikers, winning 57.4% of aerial duels.
Combining Šeško’s pace and aerial prowess with Mbeumo and Fernandes’ great ball playing ability could unlock a different, but viable option for United to deploy as they look to right their attacking wrongs from last season.
