Ruben Amorim provides major update on future amid Manchester United interest
Ruben Amorim has provided a major update on his managerial future at Sporting CP amid interest from Manchester United.
Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United was uncertain over the summer, despite his FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May.
INEOS opted to support the Dutch manager by extending his contract, but concerns have resurfaced following a disappointing start to the season.
According to fresh reports from Sky Germany, United have approached Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as a potential replacement for Ten Hag.
The club has already made inquiries about Amorim’s situation in Portugal, signalling that while they still back Ten Hag, they are preparing for the possibility of his dismissal.
Amorim provides contract update
Amorim, also linked with a future role at Manchester City, has no plans for a winter move but has a release clause in his contract that becomes active next summer, the aforementioned report adds.
During a press conference this week, Amorim confirmed that the Portuguese club do have a contract extension prepared for him but refused to comment on whether he will take that option.
“The president (Frederico Varandas) is there and the truth is that I have always said that I have the (contract) renewal on the table,” revealed Amorim. “In that aspect we have been talking for a long time.”
He added: “Regarding the future, I will not comment.”
Ten Hag responds to reports
Despite so much external pressure, Ten Hag has remained strong in front of the media and will be happy that his team were able to win 2-1 against Brentford on the weekend.
When asked about the speculation around his position last week, the Dutch boss criticised the media for making up ‘fairy-tails’ about him being sacked.
“The noise is only coming from the media, from you guys,” he claimed. “From some of you, not all of you, but some of you.
“Bringing up stories, creating stories, creating fairy tales, making noise, bringing lies. Because I know we are all on one page in this club. I told this before the break, I told several journalists, they didn’t believe me. I see the reports, but internal in the club it’s quiet.
“Of course, we are discussing the position where we are, that we are unhappy in the position where we are and we have to turn the corner, what has to happen with a strategy to turn this corner.
“But ultimately we are quiet, we are composed, we stay where we are, we stick to the plan and we are very convinced we will make it a success.”
