Ruben Amorim provides Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo transfer update amid AS Roma January links

Ruben Amorim has seemingly provided an update on the futures of Manchester United duo Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo after the January transfer window opened.

Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table after 19 games but remain inconsistent in terms of results and performances.

Their final game of 2025 was a bleak 1-1 draw against Wolves, who recorded only their third point of the season as they sit at the bottom of the table.

It remains to be seen whether any signings are made in the January transfer window but there will certainly be noise surrounding potential exits.

Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo have both struggled for game-time this season and reports suggest that both players want to leave on loan this month.

Zirkzee was substituted at half-time against Wolves for academy player Jack Fletcher despite scoring the opener. Many fans believe that he will be departing this month with AS Roma among the clubs linked with a move.

Amorim provides Zirkzee and Mainoo transfer update

Amorim was speaking to the media on Friday afternoon ahead of United’s first game of 2026 against rivals Leeds, who have picked up form in recent weeks.

The United boss played down the possibility of making signings this month, stating that there have been ‘no conversations’ about changing the squad.

But that also seems to include outgoings, with Amorim also explaining that he does not expect any players to knock on his door and ask to leave the club this month.

“No, none have asked,” he revealed when asked if any players had come to him. “I don’t expect them to come to me and ask anything.”

While speculation continues around Zirkzee and Mainoo’s future, it appears that Amorim is expecting to have both of them at the club once the January window closes.

Will Zirkzee or Mainoo leave United?

Amorim is usually too honest in his press conferences but this feels like one of those times where he isn’t telling the entire truth.

While someone like Zirkzee might not come knocking on his door, it feels inevitable that he will be searching for a possible exit, especially with the likes of Amad and Bryan Mbeumo returning from AFCON later this month.

The fact that he was replaced by Fletcher at half-time against Wolves was telling, and even with a change of formation, he still doesn’t seem to have a natural place in the side.

Mainoo’s situation seems slightly different, with a potential midfield three moving forward opening up a space for him to come into the side once he returns from injury.

It is also claimed that the academy star is determined to revive his career at Old Trafford after a difficult period under Amorim so far.
