Rúben Amorim praises “working machine” who excelled for Manchester United against Brighton

Rúben Amorim has praised one Manchester United star for his performance against Brighton, highlighting the link-up between two of his players.

Rúben Amorim reinstated Benjamin Šeško to the starting lineup as Manchester United welcomed Brighton & Hove Albion to Old Trafford on Sunday evening in the Premier League.

Having won on each of their previous three league visits to Manchester, Brighton arrived with confidence, and the opening exchanges saw both sides tussling for control. The visitors attempted to draw United’s press, while Amorim’s men adopted a more pragmatic, long-ball approach to bypass Brighton’s pressure.

As the visitors’ back line began to waver, United grew into the game. After 20 minutes, Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock with a deserved opener, before Casemiro doubled the advantage 15 minutes later with a deflected strike from distance.

Soon after the restart, Šeško expertly brought down a long pass and slipped in Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly slotted home United’s third. Former Carrington Academy graduate Danny Welbeck then offered Brighton a lifeline, curling in a superb free-kick with 20 minutes remaining.

In stoppage time, Charalampos Kostoulas headed in from a corner to set up a tense finish, but Mbeumo’s late second sealed a 4–2 victory and all three points for Amorim’s side.

Mbeumo stars yet again

While recent fixtures have definitely improved the atmosphere in and around Old Trafford, Man Utd endured a difficult start to the season, but one man who has looked like a star since the beginning of the season has been Mbeumo, who joined from Brentford in the summer.

After eight games, the Cameroonian winger now sits on four goals and one assist for his new side, the club’s current top scorer with two goals more than any other United player.

Speaking after the game, Amorim highlighted the 26-year-old’s contribution to the team and how he has transformed the forward line.

“He’s a working machine, he’s so good in transitions. He’s improving when we’re organising the final third, the connection with Amad, it’s really hard to beat these two guys. They’re really fast, hard to beat 1v1.”

Man Utd’s right side is very strong

Many were wondering whether the signing of Mbeumo was necessary, considering the performance of Amad last season, who cemented his spot as a starting player for United. During the opening fixtures, their link-up play looked slightly disjointed as they both adapted to each other’s playing style.

Against Sunderland before the international break, it was clear that the chemistry between the two was starting to grow, which was further on show against Liverpool and now Brighton, as the two have understood each other’s game.

Behind the two, either Leny Yoro or Matthijs de Ligt have been deployed by Amorim as the right-sided centre-back. While it could be argued that the Dutch centre-back has been better in the centre, there is no doubt that he has still been one of, if not the best, Man Utd players so far this season, with Yoro also being up there with the best.

With Cunha back from injury and now on the score sheet, he will be looking to replicate Mbeumo and Amad’s success on the right flank on the left, where he will link up with Luke Shaw when Lisandro Martinez returns from injury soon.
