Rúben Amorim told he must change Manchester United star’s position following failed Leicester experiment
Rúben Amorim has been told he must change the position of one Manchester United player after an experiment did not go to plan against Leicester City last week.
Manchester United’s recent win over Leicester City marked Rúben Amorim’s 10th win as the club’s new head coach, just under three months since he took the job.
However, despite qualifying for the last 16 of the FA Cup, the victory was far from convincing after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s visiting cohort looked like the much more comfortable team despite having won just four Premier League games this season.
It took a deflected effort to land at Joshua Zirkzee’s feet to net the equaliser with an open goal, and Harry Maguire scored a winner in the dying moments that should have been ruled out for offside, had VAR been in operation.
Amorim has taken charge of 20 games so far at the club, with many worried about the lack of attacking threat the club have posed on theoretically inferior opposition.
Amorim told to adjust Dorgu’s position
However, one positive that United fans took from the game was a debut for new signing Patrick Dorgu, who arrived from Lecce in a £25 million transfer a week earlier.
The 20-year-old Denmark international played 45 minutes on the right-hand side before being replaced at half-time by Alejandro Garnacho, with many fans baffled at why Amorim chose not to play the player on the left, with many feeling that the experiment did not work after he was taken off early.
Following the result, former United defender Paul Parker has explained that Amorim must adjust where Dorgu starts for the sake of the side’s balance of play.
The Englishman stated that Dorgu must play on the left hand side in order to hand Amorim the option of having a left-footed player to play crosses in on that half of the pitch.
“He [Amorim] can definitely improve on the left-hand side, the right side with Amad has been going quite well, and that can only improve if he can add the players he desires to that team,” Parker told The People’s Person.
“The left side definitely needs somebody more attacking based. The new lad [Dorgu] could be that player if he’s allowed to play in the position that suits him. A left-footed player on the left-hand side with the ability to go round the outside rather than inside.
“It would be nice to have someone to try and get to the byline and deliver a ball. Nottingham Forest are a team that excite people because the cross the ball, they don’t dribble across the box and try and bend the ball in the far corner every time.”
Why Amorim played Dorgu on the right
Speaking after the Leicester win, Amorim was asked why he chose to deploy Dorgu on the opposite site to his expected position, to which he explained that it’s because the Danish player’s versatility allows him to play on either flank.
“He played a lot of time at Lecce on the right and the left,” the boss said. “That is one of the characteristics we pay attention to a lot, to have a player like him.
“The position, you can see in WyScout he can play both sides. If you see the history of Dorgu in the last team he played a lot of games on the right.
“We have to have wingers who can play both sides like Dalot. It’s a really important thing.
“Sometimes you need a left foot on the right side to come inside and connect in a different way, and sometimes you need a right-footer to connect and cross more balls.”
