Rúben Amorim oversees two official Manchester United first-team promotions after Academy star breaks history

Rúben Amorim has overseen two official first-team promotions after one Manchester United Academy star broke history earlier this month.

Rúben Amorim’s time at Manchester United has been split into two distinct domestic and European paths.

Across the three domestic competitions, United have performed very poorly, seeing themselves knocked out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup while sitting 16th in the Premier League table, but their European form has been much better.

The club are gearing up to face Tottenham in the Europa League final next Wednesday, with the winner set to lift the trophy and gain a spot in the Champions League next season.

While the men’s first team have so far failed to impress under Amorim, the club’s Academy have been much more successful, with talents such as Chido Obi, Tyler Fredricson, and Harry Amass all having made their debut under Amorim.

Amorim officially promotes two youngsters to the first-team

Amid the club’s turmoil and possibility of a host of first-team transfers this coming summer, United have confirmed that two of their young stars have now been promoted to Amorim’s senior side.

As per United’s official website, both Obi and Fredricson are now available to view on the senior team page. They join Academy graduates such as Amass and Toby Collyer as those who have been handed the senior tag in the last year or so.

United now have seven players in their first-team squad who graduated from the club’s Academy, with Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tom Heaton on the lift.

Others, such as Marcus Rashford and Ethan Wheatley, are also classed as Academy graduates within United’s first-team, but are currently on loan at other clubs.

Obi breaks United record during first start

17-year-old Danish striker Obi has now made seven appearances for the club’s senior side since joining from Arsenal in late 2024, with six of these coming as a substitute.

However, the young starlet made his full debut and first start for United during a recent 4-3 loss against Brentford, playing 90 senior minutes for the first time in his career.

With Amorim selecting Obi from the start during the tie earlier this month, the future striker became United’s youngest-ever player to start a senior Premier League fixture, breaking Mason Greenwood’s record.

Should Obi score a goal for United in the league before the end of the season, he will also become United’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the Premier League.
