Ruben Amorim must start “incredible” Manchester United star against Fulham after failed experiment

Ruben Amorim will need to make at least one change to his Manchester United lineup to face Fulham on the weekend.

Manchester United return to Premier League action after a much-need victory against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.

However, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro were both substituted due to knocks in that clash which leaves the Reds short in the defensive line.

They are both doubts for the visit to Fulham on Sunday evening as Ruben Amorim wants to take precaution with any potential injuries.

“I don’t know,” Amorim replied when asked about the pair during his pre-Fulham press conference.

“Leny [Yoro] has a pain, and Mata [De Ligt] was a bruise from a touch. Leny was a little bit tired, he is playing more in this moment, so we have to be really careful, and we will see. I don’t know.”

That does not leave United with many defensive options for the back three, with Jonny Evans out of action and Victor Lindelöf unlikely to be match fit.

Amorim must start Mazraoui vs Fulham after failed wingback experiment

It seems quite clear that Amorim needs to reintroduce Noussair Mazraoui to the back three after his failed experiment with the Moroccan at wingback.

Mazraoui was not included in the squad against Rangers due to precaution but will likely be available for the trip to London.

He was one of the standout players in the early games under Amorim, where he played as the right centre-back.

After winning the club’s Player of the Month award in November, Amorim described Mazraoui as “incredible” and someone the club must build around.

However, the 27-year-old’s performance levels have dropped recently as he has been playing as one of the wingbacks. He looked much more comfortable on the right side of the back three.

With two defenders potentially out of action agains Fulham, this seems like the perfect opportunity to put Mazraoui back into his favoured position.

He would be paired alongside Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez. In terms of on-the-ball play, that is United’s strongest backline.
