Ruben Amorim must set Alejandro Garnacho new task after “very promising” transfer decision

Alejandro Garnacho made an impact from the bench on the weekend as Manchester United drew 2-2 against Everton at Goodison Park.

Manchester United battled to salvage a point against an in-form Everton in their Premier League clash on Saturday afternoon.

Everton dominated the first half. Beto opened the scoring before Abdoulaye Doucouré doubled their lead. United’s defence struggled, looking far from Premier League standard.

The Reds offered little improvement after the break, but Bruno Fernandes sparked hope with a brilliant free-kick, shifting the momentum in their favour.

Manuel Ugarte then drilled in a well-taken half-volley to equalise, with substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Chido Obi making a noticeable impact.

In the dying moments, Everton were awarded a penalty when former United defender Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Harry Maguire.

However, following a VAR review, referee Andy Madley was advised to check the pitch-side monitor and ultimately overturned his initial decision, ensuring United escaped with a draw.

Amorim must set Garnacho new task

It was noted before the game that Garnacho had entered Goodison Park cutting a frustrated figure and his absence from the starting team explained that.

The 20-year-old once again made a positive impact from the bench, and he will continue to be one of United’s better players this season – even if he does frustrate in front of goal.

However, the immediate concern for Amorim in relation to the Argentine doesn’t necessarily have to be improving his consistency in front of goal, but instead seeing him build a relationship with new signing Patrick Dorgu.

Dorgu, who signed for the club in January for £25 million, was United’s best player once again on the weekend and has been a positive spark in all three of his appearances for the club so far.

Last week, it was extremely frustrating how often Garnacho ended up ignoring Dorgu’s overlapping – or underlapping – runs. It was quite clear that they were not on the same wavelength.

Garnacho also enjoys being able to use the overlapping run as a decoy for him to run inside but when you never use that run, it no longer becomes a decoy.

The young forward can certainly do with some improvement in front of goal, but seeing him build a positive relationship with Dorgu could end up being Amorim’s immediate task for Garnacho.

Against Everton, Dorgu won eight ground duels, attempted four crosses and had 89 touches of the ball. He also won four free-kicks, including the one for Fernandes’ goal. He has been described as a “very promising” talent.

United have missed seeing a wide relationship between two players since Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, where they always seemed to be on the same page.

Amorim’s team could see major improvements if a similar kind of link-up was to build between those two players on the left.
