Rúben Amorim must make sure he is mindful of one of his Manchester United starlets after a mixed performance against West Ham in pre-season.
Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United secured their first pre-season win with a 2-1 victory over West Ham in New Jersey, courtesy of two goals from Bruno Fernandes.
The Reds came out strong in humid conditions, nearly taking the lead early when Rasmus Højlund struck the outside of the post. Their pressure paid off soon after as Fernandes converted a penalty to put United ahead.
Amad looked to have doubled the lead after a slick move initiated by Manuel Ugarte, but the goal was ruled out for offside. United went into the break with a one-goal advantage, thanks to Fernandes’ spot-kick.
Early in the second half, Fernandes grabbed his second, lofting the ball over Alphonse Areola after Kobbie Mainoo intercepted a pass high up the pitch.
Jarrod Bowen pulled one back for West Ham just after the hour mark, but a full set of outfield changes by Amorim helped United maintain control and see out the win.
Heaven had a mixed display vs West Ham
Ayden Heaven’s rise at Old Trafford has been fantastic, with the 18-year-old putting in some “really special” performances across his first six months at United.
However, with his 65 minutes against West Ham, his mixed display in New Jersey has shown that there is still a lot of work to do to make him a more consistent player.
Heaven had great moments in the opening quarter of the game, winning United’s penalty and generally marshalling the threat from Diouf. However, as the game progressed, he began to wobble, committing a few wayward passes.
Ultimately, Bowen outdid him for West Ham’s opening goal, and Heaven was probably somewhat relieved when Amorim made his wholesale changes in the second half.
Amorim must be careful with Heaven
There is little doubt that Heaven has secured his spot as part of United’s first team squad, although shouts claiming that he must start are a little premature.
Heaven’s talent is evident to see, but he must be managed and his minutes limited as he becomes a regular starter in the seasons to come.
Sometimes, young players should be handed as many professional minutes as possible. Still, in Heaven’s case, there is little need for this, as he already possesses the physicality and technical ability to hold his own in top-flight football.
Amorim must ensure that the centre-back can grow and develop in a safe environment. Therefore, he should be considered no more than a squad player, to help avoid any loss in confidence or excessive exposure as his form peaks and dips.
