What Rúben Amorim privately told Marcus Rashford as ‘real reason’ for Manchester United axe revealed
Rúben Amorim’s real reason for axing Marcus Rashford from his recent Manchester United squad has been revealed, including what he told the 27-year-old winger.
Marcus Rashford looks set to leave Manchester United in 2025 after a bombshell interview in which the 27-year-old revealed his plans to pursue a new challenge.
Rashford, who once spearheaded United’s attack with a remarkable 30-goal season under Erik ten Hag in 2022/23, has struggled to hit those heights in recent campaigns. Under Rúben Amorim, he has slipped down the pecking order, with Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes now preferred in advanced positions.
A fixture at Manchester United for nearly two decades, Rashford’s journey began with a bang at 18 years old, scoring twice on his debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League and netting another brace in his Premier League debut against Arsenal.
With Manchester United reportedly willing to accept bids of around £40 million, Rashford’s departure appears inevitable, bringing an end to his long association with the club as he sets his sights on new opportunities.
Amorim’s reason for Rashford’s squad ommissions
Rashford has not been a part of United’s last three matchday squads, having been axed from the sides that beat Manchester City and lost to Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth.
While Amorim has said each time that the decision to omit Rashford has been down to “selection,” the Daily Star have revealed the real reason as to why he’s been overlooked in the last two weeks.
The report states that, more than anything, Rashford has failed to impress Amorim in training, with the 39-year-old seeing others as more deserving for a place in the 20-man matchday teams of late.
Garnacho was also subject to the same treatment for the City tie, but he has since been brought back into the fold, coming off the bench against Spurs and Bournemouth.
What Amorim told Rashford in private
Further, the above report states that Amorim has informed Rashford that he will not be reinstated into the team until his attitude improves.
While many have linked Rashford’s omissions to his bold interview last week, Amorim played this down, saying he is only focused on improving the 27-year-old as a player and that he does not lay the blame of Rashford’s interview solely on the player himself.
“Of course it’s a hard situation,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “But I understand that this kind of players, they have a lot of people around them, making some choices that are not sometimes the first idea from the player.
“I understand, I can separate things. I’m always here for helping Marcus as another player. They have to do what they have to do… I say they chose to do that interview, it’s not just Marcus, and I understand that.
“For me, as a coach, I’m just focused on the performance, the way he trains. The rest, it’s better for me and the club to deal with that when the time comes.
“At the moment, I’m just focused on improving Marcus, we need a lot in this moment from a talented guy like Marcus and I forget, for now, the interview. I just see what I see on the pitch.”
