Ruben Amorim could solve three Manchester United issues by making some adjustments to the XI which started against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester United have had mixed results since Ruben Amorim took charge of the club last month, with two wins in five games.

The new head coach is learning about his players and what positions fit them best in his ideal setup and formation.

Before the game, many would have argued that the team to face Nottingham Forest was one of the strongest Amorim could have picked.

André Onana had Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez in front of him, with Diogo Dalot at left wingback and Amad Diallo at right wingback.

Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo were in the midfield behind the two attacking no.10s of Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, while Rasmus Højlund led the line.

But this didn’t work for various reasons. But a few tweaks to that team could solve some of the issues which were shown.

The problems on the left side of the team have seemed obvious in these opening games, with Dalot not looking his best on that side, especially with the attacking responsibility he has.

Garnacho has also looked far from comfortable in his new role. Instead of holding the width in attack and getting space to run at defenders, the Argentine is often finding himself trying to receive the ball in small pockets of space.

Against Forest, it seemed obvious that Martínez did not want to fire the ball into Garnacho’s feet. He rarely made that pass into the pocket and he is the defender you’d expect to play it more than anyone else.

Meanwhile, Amad has been excelling in the games under Amorim so far, with four assists in five games, but you still feel like he should be involved more.

There have been too many times where the team’s bias to playing to the left side means that Amad is almost frozen out of play. He should be getting more touches in advanced areas to cause the opposition problems.

Amorim could opt to simply shuffle these three players around and it could provide a solution to all of their problems shown.

By swapping Dalot to right wingback, Amad to the no.10 position and Garnacho to left wingback, we could see better displays from all of them.

Dalot will be more comfortable in possession on his natural side and while his final third delivery still isn’t great, it would likely be better once he returns to that right side.

Meanwhile, Garnacho’s role as a wingback would be similar to Amad, who often found a lot of space to play one-versus-one against the opposition’s fullback. Those are the situations that the 20-year-old has been missing. Space to run forward and make danger.

Garnacho has also shown over the last year that he has the energy to track back and offer support defensively.

That would also still allow Amorim the flexibility to change the shape of the team, who have defended as a back five and four at times in these opening games. Dalot can move into a fullback role with Martínez spreading wide to act as the left-back. Garnacho would then be essentially defending the same way he has done under Erik ten Hag.

Finally, those two changes make space for Amad Diallo to prove himself in his best position. Alongside Bruno Fernandes, he would be able to pick the ball up in those pockets and actually make things happen, while also afforded more freedom to pick the ball up and make things happen.

While the team that started against Forest on the weekend were underwhelming, these three changes to that side could help platform several of the players in the team and it will be interesting to see whether Amorim tries out any of these changes in the coming weeks.
