A group of Manchester United players are reportedly starting to question Rúben Amorim’s system as his position at Old Trafford is clarified.

Rúben Amorim’s first three months at Manchester United have been anything but smooth since taking over from Erik ten Hag.

Appointed in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to rebuild a club in turmoil.

There have been encouraging moments, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains a concern. Under Amorim, United have won 10 of their first 21 matches, losing nine and drawing two.

Off the pitch, challenges have been just as demanding. Three senior attackers left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements arriving, while Lisandro Martínez and Amad could miss the rest of the season with respective injuries.

However, there have been positives. United strengthened at left wing-back with the signing of Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven has joined as a promising prospect for the future.

United players questioning Amorim’s system

A new report from the Daily Mail has now claimed that, following the loss against Tottenham and other recent results, a group of United’s players are starting to “lose faith” in Amorim’s system.

It is claimed that, amid poor results, confidence in his methods is starting to wain after the club continue to be rescued by what is perceived to be individual moments of brilliance rather than tactical superiority.

One dressing-room source has reportedly told the Daily Mail: “The feeling is, ‘We got away with one, but we might not be so lucky next time.'”

Amorim is said to still have the support of the players, but a “disaffected group” of players within the first-team are questioning whether his methods will bring success back to Old Trafford.

What United think of Amorim following recent results

However, according to journalist Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic, United still maintain faith in Amorim and his methods, and he retains the full backing of those above him at the club, leaving no chance that the head coach will be let go from Old Trafford.

“INEOS and the people in charge of the club are wedded to Rúben Amorim,” Whitwell told Sky Sports News. “They were the ones that made the decision to replace Erik ten Hag with him.

“They had other options. They could have tried to see out the season with Erik ten Hag. They could have perhaps made Ruud van Nistelrooy interim manager until the end of the season. I don’t think that would have been ideal at all because you’ve got this kind of limbo situation.

“How long can he last with these results? I think they have to get to the summer. I don’t think there’s any immediate pressure on him in terms of his job security. Clearly, there’s pressure in terms of actually trying to get results.

“But I think everyone can appreciate that he’s been dealt a very bad hand here. Now, obviously, you might say he’s playing it badly. But I feel that there’s certainly enough latitude for him to keep going in the way that he is doing until the end of the season.”
