Rúben Amorim has delivered a potential hint to his Manchester United starting line-up as Rangers travel to Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

Manchester United are set to face Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday evening as they continue their Europa League journey.

The beginning of 2025 has delivered mixed results for Rúben Amorim’s side. A determined draw against Liverpool and an impressive win over Arsenal initially sparked optimism, but a lacklustre victory against Southampton – despite Amad’s brilliant hat-trick – was followed by a disappointing 3-1 loss to Brighton, leaving fans frustrated.

Thursday’s clash presents a vital chance for United to respond and rebuild faith among the Old Trafford faithful. As strong favourites, they’ll be looking to deliver a performance that restores both confidence and momentum.

Currently sitting seventh in the Europa League standings – well within the automatic qualification spots for the knockout stages – a win would help solidify their position and bring much-needed positivity heading into the latter stages of the group phase.

Amorim delivers line-up hint vs Rangers

Speaking to club media ahead of the fixture, Amorim has explained that he wants to see more from one of his players against Rangers.

Rasmus Højlund is the current top-scorer in the Europa League, joint with FC Porto’s
Samu Aghehowa, Ferencváros’s Barnabás Varga, and Galatasaray’s Yunus Akgün, with all four players scoring five a-piece.

Amorim was specifically questioned by the club, asking if he wants to see Højlund score once again after having scored four goals in two Europa League games under Amorim.

“Yes,” Amorim said in reply, potentially hinting that he is thinking of starting the Danish international on Thursday evening.

“He’s in the squad. We’ll see if he starts the game, I’m always expecting the best from my players.”

Amorim singles out “amazing” Fernandes

Club captain Bruno Fernandes is set to make his 50th Europa League appearance on Thursday should he face Rangers either from the start or off the bench.

Amorim was further questioned on how important it is that the Portuguese international has remained available through a challenging set of fixtures, with his durability and fitness allowing him to play twice a week for a sustained period.

“It’s really important,” Amorim said. “He’s amazing. He’s always ready to play, of course you sometimes feel that he’s not fresh — it’s impossible! — but the availability of Bruno is really important in a league where you play in three days.

“And the impact that he has in the team, the calm he brings on the ball with the confidence, so it’s really important for us.”
