Rúben Amorim provides triple injury update before Manchester United face Liverpool (Premier League)
Rúben Amorim has provided the injury latest on four Manchester United players ahead of the club’s trip to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United will kick off 2025 with a monumental challenge as they head to Anfield on Sunday afternoon to face Premier League leaders Liverpool in what may be their toughest match of the season.
Liverpool, led by Arne Slot, are flying high at the top of the table, while United are in a dire position, sitting 14th and only seven points clear of the relegation zone. Rúben Amorim has admitted the club are enduring one of the most difficult periods in their recent history.
United have lost five of their last six Premier League games, including disappointing home defeats to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United, as well as away losses to Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
A win at Anfield may seem unlikely, but it could provide United with a much-needed spark to begin 2025 on a positive note and begin to turn the page on a disastrous 2024.
Amorim provides triple United injury update
Ahead of the Liverpool fixture, Amorim confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Marcus Rashford would be unable to travel to the tie due to injury.
“At the moment he’s ill, he’s not training, so we’ll see in the future, but this is like a normal player,” he explained. “Then I make a selection, it’s the same. I think he’s going to be out this week. He’s not training so we will see but I think, this week, he’s out.”
However, in a further interview with club media, Amorim has now provided the latest on a further three playesr.
The 39-year-old explained that Jonny Evans will be unable to play but that he is confident that both Victor Lindelöf and Luke Shaw are almost ready to return to the team.
“I think Rashford is ill. Jonny is out. I think the rest – Vic is almost there and Luke also. But they are out. The others, I think, are fit.”
Although not mentioned above, Mason Mount is also not available after sustaining an injury against Manchester City in December, and is not expected to return until 2025.
Liverpool injury news latest
Slot has provided the latest on all his players’ fitness, explaining that Joe Gomez is unavailable but that Trent Alexander-Arnold will play and Dominik Szoboszlai returns after a one-game suspension.
“Joe is, of course, not in a good place when it comes to his injury,” Slot said. “He is out for a few weeks, that’s for sure. Conor and Ibou will train with us today for the first time. So, [I’m] curious and interested to see where they exactly are, of course.
“They have worked hard to come back to the team but the next step is always: ‘How do you handle team sessions?’ They will train with us today, the two of them.
“Of course, they still have to come in but we trained yesterday and I assume everybody is fit, although we are in a period of time where some people get sick as well. But I have heard nothing about that yet.
“So, hopefully, everybody is ready – except for Joe Gomez – to be part of the game on Sunday.”
