Rúben Amorim has reportedly ‘saved’ one Manchester United star’s career after Erik ten Hag deemed him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are gearing up for the 2025 transfer windows as Rúben Amorim becomes more settled at Old Trafford and gains a deeper understanding of his squad.

The Portuguese manager’s most memorable victory so far came against arch-rivals Manchester City, with late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo clinching a vital Premier League win.

To facilitate new signings, United are likely to part ways with some high-profile players in the coming months. Marcus Rashford is one such name being considered for departure, with the club reportedly open to offers in the region of £40 million this summer.

Even with potential departures, United are pushing to make up to five key signings in 2025, aiming to strengthen across all areas of the pitch, including attack, midfield, and defence.

Amorim saves Maguire’s career

According to a new report from GiveMeSport, after his first month in the job, Amorim has now intervened at the club to make sure their decision on Harry Maguire is reversed.

Previously, former manager Erik ten Hag was keen to dump the defender from Old Trafford, with the club accepting a £30 million bid for him in 2023, and the 31-year-old remaining on the market in the 2024 window after his move to London fell through.

However, in a new twist, Amorim is said to have backed Maguire to United’s hierarchy, and that it is now increasingly likely that the extension in his current contract will be triggered.

Maguire’s £190,000 a week deal with the club is due to run out in June 2025, but United have the option to extend this by a further season, and with Amorim wanting to keep Maguire on board, this will likely be activated.

United are said to be well-versed with the player’s “impressive resolve and leadership qualities” at the club, which Amorim sees as a key trait.

Amorim knows what’s “perfect” for Maguire

Following Maguire’s performance against City, where he helped lock down deadly striker Erling Haaland, Amorim explained that he thinks his system is “perfect” for Maguire.

“Maguire is perfect when you play with the three defenders,” said the 39-year-old.

“I think in the middle [he] is perfect. Then the way that the striker that they have [Haaland] with the long balls, you need to be really strong and so was perfect for him. Not just Harry, all the guys, defend really well.

“They were really focused and that is the key to play better. I think he did a great job and also his team-mates did a great job.”
