Rúben Amorim told four Manchester United players he must build around, wildcard option included
Rúben Amorim has been advised to consider building around four stars as he pieces together his best starting XI at Manchester United.
Rúben Amorim has spent the past five weeks familiarising himself with Manchester United’s squad since taking over from Erik ten Hag as head coach at Old Trafford.
In his first eight games in charge, Amorim has guided United to four wins, one draw, and three defeats across all competitions. Despite the mixed results, his footballing philosophy is already becoming evident at the club.
Several players, including Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, and Noussair Mazraoui, are thriving under his guidance. This trio, in particular, has become integral to Amorim’s vision, earning their status as undroppable within the team.
Amorim has also dealt with a number of challenges during his first month in charge, handling them with admirable composure and professionalism as he continues to shape United’s future.
Sheringham advices Amorim to build around four players
While Amorim’s best XI is starting to take shape at the club, former United striker and club legend Teddy Sheringham has explained to Genting that he feels there are four players who must be part of said XI.
“I think Harry Maguire has still got that stature at the football club. I think he’s still captain material,” Sherringham said. “Kobbie Mainoo, who has a lovely presence in midfield. Amad, who I talked about earlier, and [Rasmus] Højlund.
“Amad and Højlund both young lads that have been showing good grit. I like Hojlund. He’s been feeding off scraps for far too long, but he’s still scoring goals. I think he’s got something about him. He’s still only a very young boy to be leading the line at Man United.
“When they had the choice to buy either Harry Kane or him one and a half years ago, I would have said, you’ve got to go and get Harry Kane to lead the line for the next two years, three years, and then get Højlund in.
“But now Højlund has had that 18-month experience. I think it’s held him in good stead, and I think he’s in a good place, that’s what I’m taking from the way that he plays.”
Selecting Maguire is a wildcard option
Considering the centre-back options that Rúben Amorim has at his disposal, choosing Maguire as the man to build around in defence is a wildcard choice from Sherringham.
Under the 39-year-old, Matthijs de Ligt has been nothing short of sensational, while 19-year-old Leny Yoro is starting to show why the club spent over £50 million on him in the recent summer window.
After a tough few years at the club, 31-year-old Maguire is starting to prove himself at United again and played well against Manchester City, helping to lock up striker Erling Haaland during a brilliant 2-1 win.
However, although Maguire is reportedly set to stay at the club beyond this summer, he is still likely to leave United in the next few years, and it may be better off if Amorim chooses to form his back line around De Ligt and Yoro in the coming seasons.
