Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has laid out Rúben Amorim’s rough plan for Academy striker Chido Obi-Martin following his fantastic start to life at Carrington.

While Manchester United have recently made a drastic change in the first-team by replacing former manager Erik ten Hag with new head coach Rúben Amorim, the club are also spending signifiant resources securing academy talent.

In the summer, United confirmed the signings of some of the best young players across world football, with former Arsenal academy player Chido Obi-Martin joinin the club’s U18s in a shock move.

The young star has since shone for the club at that level, scoring six goals and providing three assists during his opening eight appearances, including a hattrick during his debut.

After scoring against Stoke’s U18s during a 3-0 win, the 17-year-old became the U18 Premier League all-time top scorer, with 37 goals in just 23 appearances across his time with United and Arsenal in the competition.

Amorim’s Obi-Martin plans

Former United striker and club legend Andy Cole, who retains close connections to those within Old Trafford, has explained that rough plan that has been outlined for Obi-Martin under Amorim.

Cole explained that, should his development go as the club expect, Obi-Martin will likely be part of Amorim’s first-team squad within a few seasons.

“I know somebody that worked with him at Arsenal and I’ve been told that he has a bright future ahead of him,” Cole told BetFred.

“I’ve heard he’s a confident individual and very talented, but fingers crossed he gets his head down and performs because fingers crossed, if things go as they’re expected for him, you could see him in the Manchester United first-team in a few years.

“One of the reasons why he left Arsenal was because they weren’t prepared to fast-track him as quickly as he wanted. We just have to wait and see, but I’ve heard he’s a really good talent with an eye for goal.”

Amorim’s academy record

Amorim is known for being someone who is keen to trust young stars, with 17-year-old Sporting winger Geovany Quenda a key part of the 39-year-old’s side in Portugal before his move to United.

While Amorim is still getting to grips with his first-team side for now, it is expected that he will start to pay closer attention to the club’s academy in the coming months.

“He is the right person at the right time for this job, a serial rebuilder and an encourager and developer of young players,” european football expert Andy Brassell said last month.

Obi-Martin will continue to develop in the club’s Acadamy over the coming months, but all reports indicate that United will fast-track his progress into the first-team over the next few seasons should he develop as expected.
