“I want to…” Rúben Amorim explains why Casemiro isn’t playing after Manchester United price drop
Rúben Amorim has issued a damning message surrounding Casemiro with the Manchester United player having fallen deep down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Casemiro has started just one of Manchester United’s last ten fixtures under Rúben Amorim, playing just twice during that period and being an unused substitute for the last five of these fixtures.
The former Brazilian international signed for the Old Trafford club in 2022 for a fee of £60 million from Real Madrid and was brilliant in his debut season under Erik ten Hag.
The 32-year-old was instrumental in United’s Carabao Cup win over Newcastle United in February 2023, scoring the opening goal before Marcus Rashford notched a second, and played 53 times that campaign, scoring seven and assisting seven.
However, his form has been declining after several injury problems, and under Amorim, the player is behind several players in the midfield pecking order.
Amorim explains why Casemiro isn’t starting
Speaking to the press ahead of United’s coming fixture against Fulham, Amorim was questioned on why the player has lost the opportunity to play over the last two months.
In reply, Amorim simply explained that he feels Casemiro does not have the characteristics to play in his system, and that he has to make choices that benefit the team.
“He has to have the characteristics and then I have to choose the player with the characteristics on how I see the game,” the 39-year-old explained.
“It is just like that and I have to make some choices, I want to play a game that is sometimes different from other coaches and I have to chose based on that. That’s all.”
United drop asking price for Casemiro
This comes after news that United have dropped their asking price for Casemiro to below £30 million, with no suitors coming in for the player during the January window.
A new report from Brazil has explained that his former Real Madrid and United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo is pushing for Al Nassr to sign him this month.
The Saudi Pro League side must unload a foreign player in order to get the deal over the line, but there are several candidates who may leave Al Nassr soon, making way for Casemiro.
Should the Brazilian stay, it’s likely he will continue to play a very reduced role for the remainder of the season before finding a new club in the summer.
