Manchester United are preparing to sign a centre-forward for Ruben Amorim at the end of the season as they continue to struggle with a lack of goals.

Currently 15th in the Premier League, Manchester United have endured a disappointing campaign, with the managerial change failing to deliver an immediate turnaround.

Ruben Amorim has been working to implement his playing philosophy, but adapting mid-season has proven to be a difficult task.

The club’s only major signing in January was Patrick Dorgu, who joined for approximately £25 million. However, the squad remains severely lacking in attacking depth, which has been evident in their goal return—managing just 28 Premier League goals so far.

Rasmus Højlund has scored just twice in the league campaign so far this season, while Joshua Zirkzee has managed just one more goal than his counterpart.

With the summer transfer window on the horizon, United are expected to make signing a striker a top priority to bolster Amorim’s squad and several names have already been mentioned as options.

Osimhen is United’s preferred signing

Victor Osimhen is considered to be one of the best goalscorers in European football, with the Napoli striker currently on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray.

So far this season, Osimhen has 20 goals and five assists in 25 appearances which follows on from three impressive campaigns in Italy beforehand – scoring 66 goals across that period.

The Nigerian star is likely to be available for transfer in the summer window and GiveMeSport claim that he is the preferred option at Old Trafford.

However, that report also explained that there are hurdles to get over for a deal to be made, such as persuading the 26-year-old to be flexible with his wage demands, which could be a difficult task.

United identify Delap as Osimhen back-up

United will need alternative options to Osimhen as we have seen beforehand how the club can get stung by purely focusing on one signing which is slightly unrealistic.

That is exactly what those at Old Trafford are doing, according to the aforementioned report, who state that Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap has been earmarked by Amorim as the back-up to Osimhen.

Delap has scored 10 goals so far in his debut Premier League campaign, and been described by Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer as a “monster” and an “all-round striker”.

It is claimed that United would be more likely to move for Delap in the summer over Amorim’s former striker Viktor Gyokeres if a deal for Osimhen becomes unrealistic.

This follows on from Laurie Whitwell’s update on the situation, with The Athletic journalist explaining that United would be able to afford Delap’s package if Ipswich were to be relegated this season.

The Tractor Boys are currently sitting 18th in the Premier League table and two points adrift of safety, with Wolves above them in 17th place.
