Manchester United youngster Chido Obi made his first-team debut over the weekend as the Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Premier League clash in North London ended in disappointment for Manchester United, with Spurs taking advantage of defensive mistakes to secure the win.

James Maddison reacted quickest when André Onana failed to deal with a shot from Lucas Bergvall, parrying the ball into a dangerous area and allowing Maddison an easy finish.

Ruben Amorim’s side struggled in attack, unable to break down Spurs’ fragile defence over the course of 90 minutes.

One of the few positives from the match was Chido Obi’s debut in the final moments. Though he had little time to make an impact, it was still a significant milestone for the 17-year-old.

Obi becoming United first-team squad member

Obi became the third youngest appearance maker for the club in Premier League history – behind Angel Gomes (16y, 8m, 20d) and Shola Shoretire (17y, 19d).

But it appears that the striker’s debut could be followed by even more appearances in the coming months, and that isn’t just due to the injury crisis which sparked in the last week.

According to MailSport, the 17-year-old’s involvement in the first-team has increased over the last three weeks, with the teenager impressing Amorim and his staff with his quality and humbleness.

It was also claimed that first-team staff are now gathering a lot more data on Obi by analysing him in full sessions.

Obi has been excelling in the youth teams since arriving at Old Trafford and early first-team integration was always a possibility for the goalscorer.

Amorim makes decisions to ease Chido Obi’s integration

United have taken Obi’s development with caution since he joined and attempts to ease expectations were made, although things like the youngster smashing in a hat-trick against Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup made that more difficult.

The 17-year-old already has over 380,000 followers on his Instagram page and received more than 250,000 likes on his most recent post reacting to his debut. Despite playing just three minutes of professional football, this is a player who is already garnering an exceptional amount of attention.

Amorim and his staff are trying to make things easier for Obi behind the scenes as he becomes a more prominent figure in the first-team setup.

The aforementioned report from MailSport adds that the striker talent has been integrated into the first-team for meals and also has also been included in their gym sessions to further ease his integration.

Meanwhile, it is claimed that Joshua Zirkzee is providing an ‘older brother’ role to Obi and Patrick Dorgu has also been key to helping the player settle in the first-team dressing room.

It is quite clear that while United are trying to make things easier for Obi, their actions showcase that he will be an option in the first-team for more games this season.
