Ruben Amorim makes stern Manchester United sack claim after “embarrassing” West Ham defeat

Ruben Amorim has suggested that Manchester United’s chiefs should sack him if significant improvements do not happen at the start of next season.

Manchester United lost 2-0 against West Ham on Sunday afternoon in an embarrassing Old Trafford display which sees them drop to 16th in the Premier League table.

The only thing which kept United from dropping to 17th – the lowest position in the table which isn’t in the relegation spots – was the fact that Tottenham Hotspur also lost against Crystal Palace.

Funnily enough, one of those two clubs will be playing Champions League football next season depending on who wins the Europa League final later this month.

However, even if United come out victorious in that game, Amorim is demanding huge improvements from his team next season.

Amorim makes United sack claim

The United boss was furious when speaking to the media after defeat against the Hammers, and made a stern claim about his future at the club.

Amorim suggested that the club’s chiefs should sack him if he does not show improvements next season, with the Portuguese head coach suggesting that the club are losing the feeling of being a big club.

“How do I feel? How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position: embarrassed. And it’s hard to accept. Everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here,” he told journalists.

“There is no explanation, no matter the context. And I‘m talking here, I’m the biggest [person] responsible for that. We need to change a lot of things during the summer.”

Asked whether he means an overhaul of the squad, Amorim added: “I don’t know and I don’t want to talk about players. I’m talking about myself. I’m talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team.

“I have that feeling and we need to change that. We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give space to different persons.”

Amorim first to admit he must improve

United fans were delighted with Amorim’s honesty when he first took charge at Old Trafford but his comments are no longer as popular.

The circumstances the ex-Sporting boss has walked into have been terrible, but as he said, there is no excuse for the form in the Premier League.

Victory in the Europa League would be a sweet end to the season, but imagining this current United side competing in the Champions League next season is a scary thought.

United need a big summer window but Amorim will be the first to admit that he needs to improve how he’s working as well.
