Ruben Amorim makes complete U-turn on keeping Man Utd star, he was a “big fan” but is now pushing for sale

Ruben Amorim has reportedly made a U-turn on one Manchester United star, whose exit is now expected at Old Trafford this summer.

This summer, Manchester United are under pressure to strengthen their squad with fresh signings, and they’ve already begun taking steps in that direction.

Equally crucial, however, is the need to offload players who are no longer part of the club’s plans—not only to raise funds but also to streamline a squad that has become unnecessarily large.

Several members of Ruben Amorim’s squad could be candidates for departure, but the most likely sales are those who spent time out on loan last season, such as Marcus Rashford and Antony.

Still, there are some Reds who have uncertain futures, including first-choice goalkeeper André Onana, who had an extremely difficult season last term.

Amorim makes U-turn on keeping Onana

Onana has been unable to recreate his form of Ajax or Inter at Old Trafford since his 2023 arrival and has instead produced some poor mistakes which have thrown his future into question.

It was previously believed that, despite these difficulties, Amorim remained a ‘big fan’ of Onana and wanted him to stay at the club.

However, the latest reports from ESPN Argentina has stated that United and Amorim are now pushing to sell the Cameroon international this summer and he’s expected to leave.

When asked about his Old Trafford future this week, Onana refused to rule out an exit. “Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see.”

The aforementioned report added that United are in discussions with Aston Villa ‘keeper Emiliano Martínez as a potential replacement between the sticks.

Onana’s potential destination remains unknown

Onana joined United as one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in Europe and his reputation has fallen to pieces since then. He is not the only one.

It does feel like he needs replacing this summer but a move for Martínez of Villa seems to split opinion within the fanbase. The World Cup winner is like marmite – you either love him or hate him.

Any deal would have to make sense financially, with Martínez seeming like he would demand higher wages, but he is reportedly open to helping the new rebuild under Amorim.

Reports about potential destinations for Onana are scarce but could heat up later in the window.
