Ruben Amorim made a ‘jaw-dropping’ mistake during Manchester United’s draw against Fulham and fans were extremely confused.
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw against Fulham in their second Premier League outing of the season after a closely contested encounter at Craven Cottage.
United began the game on the front foot, with Matheus Cunha going close to breaking the deadlock, while Fulham threatened primarily from set-pieces.
Bruno Fernandes squandered a chance to give the visitors the lead when he missed a penalty late in the first half, but Leny Yoro made amends shortly after the restart by converting from a corner.
However, the Reds struggled to maintain control as Fulham grew into the game, eventually grabbing a deserved equaliser and even coming close to snatching all three points.
Amorim’s jaw-dropping mistake vs Fulham
It felt great to see United’s energy, pressing and quality in the opening minutes of the game but then the second half seemed like we had gone back to last season.
Things were slow and laboured, and Ruben Amorim did not help things with his substitutions. Benjamin Šeško was the only offensive player who came off the bench.
With the game at 1-1 in the final minutes of the game, the United boss surprisingly made a double substitution, bringing on Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven for Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro.
The defensive change was described by fans as a ‘jaw-dropping’ mistake as the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee remained on the bench as unused substitutes.
Amorim’s other changes included bringing Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot on, and the latter was partly at fault for Fulham’s goal.
Mainoo would’ve helped United
There were question marks over Amorim overlooking Mainoo in the game against Arsenal last weekend and his actions in this game will only make those questions louder.
Ugarte came on over the 20-year-old once again and the only time he made an impact was when United were stuck inside their own third.
Someone like Mainoo would help United actually try and get out of those positions and control the ball. It is painfully obvious that United are missing that profile.
After some positive moments early on, it was disappointing to see how the team ended that game.
